Your Daily Reprieve for Thursday  April 4, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

“Spiritual growth and experiences are not limited to orthodox believers in a deity, any more than the disease of alcoholism is limited to skid-row bums.”

~Casper, Wyo., September 1969

AA Grapevine

If you find it difficult to love the human in someone, then love the divine in him or her. The divine in that person is God. God exists in that person just as God exists in you. To love God is extremely easy because God is divine and perfect. Each time you look at an individual, if you can consciously become aware of God’s existence in him or her, then you will not be disturbed by his or her imperfections or limitations.

-Sri Chinmoy

Until you have learned to be tolerant with those who do not always agree with you; until you have cultivated the habit of saying some kind word of those whom you do not admire; until you have formed the habit of looking for the good instead of the bad there is in others, you will be neither successful nor happy. -Napoleon Hill

It’s only in our minds that we are separate from the rest of the world.

-Gay Luce

Big Book Quote

How could there be so much of precise and immutable law, and no intelligence? I simply had to believe in a Spirit of the Universe, who knew neither time nor limitation.

Foreword

The basic principles of A.A., as they are known today, were borrowed mainly from the fields of religion and medicine, though some ideas upon which success finally depended were the result of noting the behavior and needs of the Fellowship itself.

p. 16

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

When I came into A.A., I found men and women who had been through
the same things I had been through. But now they were thinking more
about how they could help others than they were about themselves.
They were a lot more unselfish than I ever was. By coming to meetings
and associating with them, I began to think a little less about myself
and a little more about other people. I also learned that I didn't have
to depend on myself alone to get out of the mess I was in. I could get a
greater strength than my own. Am I now depending less on myself and
more on God?

Meditation For The Day

You cannot help others unless you understand the person you are
trying to help. To understand the problems and temptations of others,
you must have been through them yourself. You must do all you can to
understand others. You must study their backgrounds, their likes and
dislikes, their reactions and their prejudices. When you see their
weaknesses, do not confront the person with them. Share your own
weaknesses, sins, and temptations and let other people find their own
convictions.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may serve as a channel for God's power to come into the
lives of others. I pray that I may try to understand them.

Practice

"God willing, we members of A.A. may never again have to deal with drinking, but we do have to deal with sobriety every day. How do we do it? By learning - through practicing the Twelve Steps and through sharing at meetings - how to cope with the problems that we looked to booze to solve, back in our drinking days."
c. 1976 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 560

Daily Reflection

CRYING FOR THE MOON

"This very real feeling of inferiority is magnified by his

childish sensitivity and it is this state of affairs which

generates in him that insatiable, abnormal craving for selfapproval

and success in the eyes of the world. Still a child,

he cries for the moon. And the moon, it seems, won't have

him!"

LANGUAGE OF THE HEART, p. 102

While drinking I seemed to vacillate between feeling totally

invisible and believing I was the center of the universe.

Searching for that elusive balance between the two has

become a major part of my recovery. The moon I constantly

cried for is, in sobriety, rarely full; it shows me instead its

many other phases, and there are lessons in them all. True

learning has often followed an eclipse, a time of darkness,

but with each cycle of my recovery, the light grows stronger

and my vision is clearer.

LIES

"The cruelest lies are often told in

silence."

--Robert Louis Stevenson

In treatment I said that I did not "tell" many lies - and although this

was not true (hence a lie), it missed the fact that most of my lies were

"lies of silence". It was what I did not say that produced the

confusion; the pretended self-confidence that hid the pain and shame;

the half-spoken truth that harbored the disease.

Communication is the key to any spiritual relationship and a sick

silence creates the ultimate blasphemy. God created you and me to

relate. In the interchange of our ideas is the miracle born. A sick,

angry and ego-centered silence is our shouted "no" to God.

O Lord of the paradox, let me see how the lie of silence can be used to

destroy my world.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders, that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
