Your Daily Reprieve for Friday  April 5, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

Make the most of the best and the least of the worst.

- Robert Louis Stevenson

A new day rose upon me.

It was as if another sun had risen into the sky;

the heavens were indescribably brighter, and the earth fairer;

and that day has gone on brightening to the present hour.

I have known the other joys of life, I suppose, as much as most people;

I have known art and beauty, music and gladness;

I have known friendship and love and family ties;

but it is certain that until we see God in the world

—God in the bright and boundless universe—

we never know the highest joy.

- Orville Dewey

If you think you're different you're in the right place.

~Heard at a Meeting

I shall pass through this world but once.

Any good, therefore, that I can do

or any kindness I can show to any human being,

let me do it now.

Let me not defer it or neglect it,

for I shall not pass this way again.
~Stephen Grellet

Big Book Quote

Most of us feel we need look no further for Utopia. We have it with us right here and now. Each day my friend's simple talk in our kitchen multiplies itself in a widening circle of peace on earth and good will to men.

Foreword

After three years of trial and error in selecting the most workable tenets upon which the Society could be based, and after a large amount of failure in getting alcoholics to recover, three successful groups emerged--the first at Akron, the second at New York, and the third at Cleveland. Even then it was hard to find two score of sure recoveries in all three groups.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

People often ask what makes the A.A. program work. One of the
answers is that A.A. works because it gets people away from
themselves as the center of the universe. And it teaches them to rely
more on the fellowship of others and on strength from God.

Forgetting ourselves in fellowship, prayer,

and working with others is what makes the A.A. program work.

Are these things keeping me sober?

Meditation For The Day

God is the great interpreter of one human personality to another.
Even personalities who are the nearest together have much in their
natures that remains a seated book to each other. And only as God
enters and controls their lives are the mysteries of each revealed to the other.

Each personality is so different. God alone understands
perfectly the language of each and can interpret between the two.

 Here we find the miracles of change and the true interpretation of life.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may be in the right relationship to God. I pray that God
will interpret to me the personalities of other people, so that I can
understand them and help them.

Spiritual Life

"The spiritual life is not a theory. We have to live it. Unless one's family expresses a desire to live upon spiritual principles we think we ought not to urge them. We should not talk incessantly to them about spiritual matters. They will change in time. Our behavior will convince them more than our words. We must remember that ten or twenty years of drunkenness would make a skeptic out of anyone."

Daily Reflection

TRUE BROTHERHOOD

We have not once sought to be one in a family, to be a friend

among friends, to be a worker among workers, to be a

useful member of society. Always we tried to struggle to the

top of the heap, or to hide underneath it This self-centered

behavior blocked a partnership relation with any one of

those about us. Of true brotherhood we had small

comprehension.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 53

This message contained in Step Four was the first one I

heard loud and clear; I hadn't seen myself in print before!

Prior to my coining into A.A., I knew of no place that could

teach me how to become a person among persons. From my

very first meeting, I saw people doing just that and I wanted

what they had. One of the reasons that I'm a happy, sober

alcoholic today is that I'm learning this most important

lesson.

Keep It Simple

The future is much like the present, only longer.

---Dan Quisenberry

In many way we don't know what the future holds. But in terms of recovery, we know the future holds the Twelve steps. They will be with us for life.

We should never fall into the trap of thinking we "know" the program. We'll never know all the truth and love the Steps hold for us. "Knowing the Steps" is a project we'll never finish. As we change , the Steps change. As the seasons come and go, the same field or the same tree becomes a different picture.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, I pray for Your help as I work the Steps and continue my recovery. Help me discover new treasures.

Action for the Day: I will ask long-time members of my program how they keep the program fresh and alive.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders, that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
