Your Daily Reprieve for Wednesday  April 3, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

I am in the present.

I cannot know what tomorrow will bring forth.

I can know only what the truth is for me today.

That is what I am called upon to serve,

and I serve it in all lucidity.

~Igor Stravinsky

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end;

if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth

only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin,

and in the end, despair.

~C. S. Lewis

All truth passes through three stages.

First, it is ridiculed.

Second, it is violently opposed.

Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

~Arthur Schopenhauer

We know nothing of tomorrow;

our business is to be good and happy today.
~Sydney Smith

Big Book Quote

The best reason first: If we skip this vital step, we may not overcome drinking. Time after time newcomers have tried to keep t

o themselves certain facts about their lives.

Foreword

Alcoholics Anonymous began in 1935 at Akron, Ohio, as the outcome of a meeting between a well-known surgeon and a New York broker. Both were severe cases of alcoholism and were destined to become co-founders of the A.A. Fellowship.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

When I was drinking, I was absolutely selfish, I thought
of myself first, last, and always. The universe revolved
around me at the center. When I woke up in the morning
with a hangover, my only thought was how terrible I felt
and about what I could do to make myself feel better. And
the only thing I could think of was more liquor. To quit
was impossible. I couldn't see beyond myself and my own
need for another drink. Can I now look out and beyond my
own selfishness?

Meditation For The Day

Remember that the first quality of greatness is service.
In a way, God is the greatest servant of all, because He
is always waiting for us to call on Him to help us in all
good endeavors. His strength is always available to us,
but we must ask it of Him through our own free will. It
is a free gift, but we must sincerely seek for it. A
life of service is the finest life we can live. We are
here on earth to serve others. That is the beginning and
the end of our real worth.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may cooperate with God in all good things.
I pray that I may serve God and others and so lead a
useful and happy life.

Amends

"Though the variations were many, my main theme was always "How godawful I am!" Just as I often exaggerated my modest attainments by pride, so I exaggerated my defects through guilt. I would race about, confessing all (and a great deal more) to whoever would listen. Believe it or not, I took this widespread exposure of my sins to be great humility on my part, and considered it a great spiritual asset and consolation! But later on I realized at depth that the great harms I had done others were not truly regretted. These episodes were merely the basis for storytelling and exhibitionism."
Bill W., AA Grapevine, June 1961
c. 1967 AAWS, As Bill Sees It, p. 311

Daily Reflection

ACCEPTING OUR HUMANNESS

We finally saw that the inventory should be ours, not the

other man's So we admitted our wrongs honestly and

became willing to set these matters straight.

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 222

Why is it that the alcoholic is so unwilling to accept

responsibility? I used to drink because of the things that

other people did to me. Once I came to A.A. I was told to

look at where I had been wrong. What did I have to do with

all these different matters? When I simply accepted that I

had a part in them, I was able to put it on paper and see it

for what it was —humanness. I am not expected to be

perfect! I have made errors before and I will make them

again. To be honest about them allows me to accept

them—and myself—and those with whom I had the

differences; from there, recovery is just a short distance

ahead.

Pot Luck

"If you still have some plans left, they suck, and you’ll use them."

I hear some people share regularly at my Tuesday night meeting, and they always wish the newcomers one thing—desperation. At first this seemed harsh to me, but I realized that if I hadn’t hit complete bottom, I, too, would have used the plans I had left. And when I think back to my old plans, none of them involved sobriety.

When I was new, my sponsor asked me what my back-pocket plans were, and I told him: “If this doesn’t work for me in ninety days, I’m selling my house, cashing in my retirement savings, and moving to England. Once there, I’m going to buy, operate, and live above a pub.” At the time, that was my best thinking, and I was dead serious. He looked at me, smiled, and just said, “Keep coming back.” And I did.

Today, I’m thankful that was the only alternative plan I had left. I know it would probably have killed me, but I had reached such a bottom it didn’t really matter anymore. If you’re new, I hope you’re out of any viable plans, desperate, and ready to give the program everything you’ve got. I guarantee you, it’s the best plan you’ll ever have.
