Prosperity is only an instrument to be used,

not a deity to be worshipped.

-Calvin Coolidge

Prosperity is a way of living and thinking, and not just money or things.

Poverty is a way of living and thinking,

and not just a lack of money or things.

 -Eric Butterworth

A habit for all of us to develop would be to look for something to appreciate in everyone we meet.  We can all be generous with appreciation.
~Carl Holmes

Truth is completely spontaneous.  Lies have to be taught.

-R. Buckminster Fuller

Big Book Quote

Perhaps there is a better way-we think so. For we are now on a different basis; the basis of trusting and relying upon God. We trust infinite God rather than our finite selves.

Step Twelve - "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

When the distortion has been great, however, a long period of patient striving may be necessary. After the husband joins A.A., the wife may become discontented, even highly resentful that Alcoholics Anonymous has done the very thing that all her years of devotion had failed to do. Her husband may become so wrapped up in A.A. and his new friends that he is inconsiderately away from home more than when he drank. Seeing her unhappiness, he recommends A.A.'s Twelve Steps and tries to teach her how to live. She naturally feels that for years she has made a far better job of living than he has. Both of them blame each other and ask when their marriage is ever going to be happy again. They may even begin to suspect it had never been any good in the first place.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

What other rewards have come to me as a result of my new way of living?

Each one of us can answer this question in many ways.

My relationship with my husband or my wife is on
an entirely new plane. The total selfishness is gone and more cooperation

has taken its place. My home is a home again.

Understanding has taken the place of misunderstanding
recriminations, bickering, and resentment.

A new companionship has developed which
bodes well for the future.

"There are homes where fires burn and there is bread, lamps
are lit and prayers are said.

Though people falter through the dark and nations grope,
with God Himself back of these little homes, we still can hope."

Have I come home?

Meditation For The Day

We can bow to God's will in anticipation of the thing happening which will,

in the long run, be the best for all concerned.

It may not always seem the best thing at the present time,
but we cannot see as far ahead as God can.

We do not know how His plans are laid, we only need to believe

that if we trust Him and accept whatever happens as His will in a
spirit of faith, everything will work out for the best in the end.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may not ask to see the distant scene.

I pray that one step may be enough for me.

"It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all of our activities."
1976 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85

Daily Reflection

AN UNBROKEN TRADITION

We conceive the survival and spread of Alcoholics

Anonymous to be something of far greater importance than

the weight we could collectively throw back of any other

cause.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 177

How much it means to me that an unbroken tradition of

more than half a century is a thread that connects me to Bill

W. and Dr. Bob. How much more grounded I feel to be in a

Fellowship whose aims are constant and unflagging. I am

grateful that the energies of A.A. have never been

scattered, but focused instead on our members and on

individual sobriety.

My beliefs are what make me human; I am free to hold

any opinion, but A.A.'s purpose—so clearly stated fifty

years ago—is for me to keep sober. That purpose has

promoted round-the-clock meeting schedules, and the

thousands of intergroup and central service offices, with

their thousands of volunteers. Like the sun focused through

a magnifying glass, A.A.'s single vision has lit a fire of

faith in sobriety in millions of hearts, including mine.

A New Kind of Power

When I was growing up, I thought it was important to be above other people. I was glad I was the oldest in the family, glad I was the tallest boy in grammar school, glad I was on the honor list of high school. These advantages allowed me to feel superior to other people and I came to feel that the rest of my life should be a continuation of this elevated pattern. I honestly believed that I would not be happy if I did not have a car that was more luxurious than other peoples’ cars, a home that was larger than other peoples’ homes, a career that produced more income than other peoples’ careers.

When I ended up driving an economy car, living in an efficiency apartment, and working at a modest job, I regarded myself as a failure . I was not climbing up the pyramid of power I had constructed in my mind. I was not heading toward any ultimate peak. Instead, I was scurrying around the pyramid’s base, like a workman or a drone seeking just to hold my life together with some work here and some booze there.

Then it was a lot of booze year and a little work there. Then it was pretty much booze all over the place, all over my time, booze and self-pity that I had not scaled the heights I had projected for myself.

Thank God for AA. Thank God for the hands that reached out to me and brought me in and held me close. These hands came out to me from all around, from my fellow patients, from folks with long-time sobriety who came to our unit for meetings, from my aftercare counselors, from all the people that I met at outside meetings, as I began to grow in the program. At the end of every meeting that I have attended, we have all stood in a circle holding hands, and said a prayer.

The circle image is one of the most important of my sobriety.

None of the hands that has helped me has come down on me from a superior position of power. All the hands that have helped me have reached out from positions of fellowship around me.

I was not knighted into sobriety. No monarch reached down and whacked me on the shoulder with the flat of a sword and declared, “By the power invested in me, I declare you shall be sober!”

Instead my fellow alcoholics came to me from all around. A friendly, loving group of creatures clustered around me. They told me some stories and they showed me some Steps and in that process they were saying, “We’re just like you and we made it. We know that you can make it too.”

These people showed me a path, but it wasn’t like the one I constructed myself while I was growing up and drinking. The path I have learned in AA does not move up (or down). It moves around. I am not climbing any pyramid. I am not seeking any position that is superior to anybody else’s position.

In the circle of AA there are no superior positions. We keep going over the Steps again and again. We keep going over the Big Book again and again. We keep telling our stories and hearing our stories and working on our programs together. Again and again. We keep going around the circle.

We’re not after power, or honor, or glory for the individual. We’re after understanding for the group.

The first word of the program is not I.

The first word of the program is We.

And that is what makes it work.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference

regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders,

that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience

from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
