Your Daily Reprieve for Tuesday March 26, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

As Aunt Naomi was listing all the things she was going to do to help this person, her friend stopped her in mid-sentence.  "Naomi, girl," she said, "you need to resign as general manager of the universe.  You need to learn that sometimes the best way to help a person is to let them help themselves.  Otherwise, they never learn how.  And they are always going to make their problems your problems."        -Patti LaBelle

Without love one lacks the warmth and emotions which create life, youth, and beauty.  One is like a stagnant pond compared with a flowing, babbling, laughing brook.  One depresses the life force in those around oneself instead of radiating sunshine to all who come near.   -Leon DeSeblo

“I seek strength not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy -- myself.”

~Grapevine: November 1967

“To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything He has given us - and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him.
Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference.”    - Thomas Merton

Big Book Quote

If we have carefully followed directions, we have begun to sense the flow of His Spirit into us. To some extent we have become God-conscious.

Foreword

With the publication of the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" in 1939, the pioneering period ended and a prodigious chain reaction set in as the recovered alcoholics carried their message to still others. In the next years alcoholics flocked to A.A. by tens of thousands, largely as the result of excellent and continuous publicity freely given by magazines and newspapers throughout the world. Clergymen and doctors alike rallied to the new movement, giving it unstinted support and endorsement.

p. 17

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Strength comes also from working with other alcoholics.
When you are trying to help a new prospect with the program,
you are building up your own strength at the same
time. You see the other person in the condition you might
be in yourself and it makes your resolve to stay sober
stronger than ever. Often, you help yourself more than
the other person, but if you do succeed in helping the
prospect to get sober, you are stronger from the experience
of having helped another person. Am I receiving strength
from helping others?

Meditation For The Day

Faith is the bridge between you and God. It is the bridge
which God had ordained. If all were seen and known, there
would be no merit in doing right. Therefore God has
ordained that we do not see or know directly. But we can
experience the power of His spirit through our faith. It
is the bridge between us and Him, which we can take or
not, as we will. There could be no morality without free
will. We must make the choice ourselves. We must make the
venture of belief.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may choose and decide to cross the bridge of
faith. I pray that by crossing this bridge I may receive
the spiritual power I need.

Recovery

"Most emphatically we wish to say that any alcoholic capable of honestly facing his problems in the light of our experience can recover, provided he does not close his mind to spiritual concepts. He can only be defeated by an attitude of intolerance or belligerent denial. We find that no one need have difficulty with the spirituality of the program. Willingness, honesty and open mindedness are the essentials of recovery. But these are indispensable"
c. 1976 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 570

Daily Reflection

THE TEACHING IS NEVER OVER

Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit

your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the

wreckage of your past Give freely of what you find and join

us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and

you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of

Happy Destiny. May God bless you and keep you—until

then.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 164

These words put a lump in my throat each time I read them.

In the beginning it was because I felt, "Oh no! The teaching

is over. Now I'm on my own. It will never be this new

again." Today I feel deep affection for our A.A. pioneers

when I read this passage, realizing that it sums up all of

what I believe in, and strive for, and that—with God's

blessing—the teaching is never over, I'm never on my own,

and every day is brand new.

SHARING OUR SOBRIETY

The speed and frequency that I was willing to tell others how wrong that they were was unbelievable. How they are the cause of all of my misfortune? And all my troubles.  The old "if only" line of defence. The way I would resent people when they pointed out my defects or where I was wrong. The self centered fear was just so overwhelming . I was so afraid you would see the real me.

What happened when I got sober and came to you was. People were honest and shared - telling things not only from the podium but also 1 on 1 face to face. You shared your sobriety with me and your recovery. From this came a sense of hope that began to develop along with strength from experience freely given and witnessed.

Father, please remind me each and every day that I can only keep it by giving it away. Never let me forget it.

Today I will freely give my sobriety away to anyone anywhere at any time.

Peace be with you.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders, that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
