Your Daily Reprieve for Monday March 25, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

“The thing about life is that you must survive. Life is going to be difficult, and dreadful things will happen. What you do is move along, get on with it, and be tough. Not in the sense of being mean to others, but being tough with yourself and making a deadly effort not to be defeated. We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers - but never blame yourself. It's never your fault. But it's always your fault, because if you wanted to change you're the one who has got to change.”

~Katherine Hepburn

Great opportunities to help others seldom come,

but small ones surround us every day."

~Sally Koch

However many holy words you read,

However many you speak,

What good will they do you,

If you do not act upon them?

--Buddha

If you love somebody, let them go,

for if they return, they were always yours.

And if they don't, they never were.

--Kahlil Gibran

The door opened and he stood there, fresh-skinned and glowing. There was something about his eyes. He was inexplicably different. What had happened?

Foreword

Nevertheless, the infant Society determined to set down its experience in a book which finally reached the public in April 1939. At this time the recoveries numbered about one hundred. The book was called "Alcoholics Anonymous," and from it the Fellowship took its name. In it alcoholism was described from the alcoholic's point of view, the spiritual ideas of the Society were codified for the first time in the Twelve Steps, and the application of these Steps to the alcoholic's dilemma was made clear. The remainder of the book was devoted to thirty stories or case histories in which the alcoholics described their drinking experiences and recoveries. This established identification with alcoholic readers and proved to them that the virtually impossible had now become possible. The book "Alcoholics Anonymous" became the basic text of the Fellowship, and it still is. This present volume proposes to broaden and deepen the understanding of the Twelve Steps as first was written in the earlier work.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Strength comes from coming to believe in a Higher Power
that can help you. You can't define this Higher Power, but
you can see how it helps other alcoholics. You hear them
talk about it and you begin to get the idea yourself. You
try praying in a quiet time each morning and you begin to
feel stronger, as though your prayers were heard. So you
gradually come to believe there must be a Power in the
world outside of yourself, which is stronger than you and
which you can turn to for help. Am I receiving strength from
my faith in a Higher Power?

Meditation For The Day

Spiritual development is achieved by daily persistence in
living the way you believe God wants you to live. Like the
wearing away of a stone by steady drops of water, so will
your daily persistence wear away all the difficulties and
gain spiritual success for you. Never falter in this daily,
steady persistence. Go forward boldly and unafraid.
God will help and strengthen you, as long as you are trying
to do His will.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may persist day by day in gaining spiritual
experience. I pray that I may make this a lifetime work.

Trudging

"Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny. May God bless you and keep you - until then."

Daily Reflection

A FULL AND THANKFUL HEART

/ try hard to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful

heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with

gratitude, one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing

love, the finest emotion that we can ever know.

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 37

I believe that we in Alcoholics Anonymous are fortunate in

that we are constantly reminded of the need to be grateful

and of how important gratitude is to our sobriety. I am truly

grateful for the sobriety God has given me through the

A.A. program and am glad I can give back what was given

to me freely. I am grateful not only for sobriety, but for the

quality of life my sobriety has brought. God has been

gracious enough to give me sober days and a life blessed

with peace and contentment, as well as the ability to give

and receive love, and the opportunity to serve others—in

our Fellowship, my family and my community. For all of

this, I have "a full and thankful heart."

Today's Quotation:

We are responsible for what we are, and what we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves.  If what we are now has been the result of our past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.

~Swami Vivekananda

Today's Meditation:

What I will be next week or next year depends on what I do today.  When I look at things that way, today becomes much more important.  The way I treat people, the way I talk to them, the ways in which I act, the actions that I neglect-- all of these things seem to be much more important when I realize that each of these aspects of my day today will go some way towards defining the person I will be in the future.

My hope is that I'm not going to grow and develop into a new person by making many mistakes and learning through regret and embarrassment and my own poor example.  My hope is that my actions of today help me to grow in dignity, love, peace and hope, and help to spread dignity, love, peace, and hope.  If I'm able to do this, then not only my future will be brighter, but perhaps the future of someone else will be brighter because of the way that I have treated him or her.

I've noticed that almost all of the people who talk about present actions are focused on our actions that affect other people, our selves, or other living creatures, not actions like buying a new TV set or filling our tank with gas.  Though these things can be important, they aren't the things that help us to grow and expand and become more than we are today.  The things that help us to grow are those things that help others (or our selves) to see their own value and value their own lives.

Sometimes actions take a firm schedule and a lot of dedication-- if you want to write a novel, it doesn't happen in an hour or two.  Sometimes actions are quick and fleeting, like the smile and the sincere "thank you" for the person who held the door open for you.  Whatever kinds of actions we commit, though, it's important that we keep in mind that they are the parts of our lives that are shaping us, molding us, and defining us as we grow into tomorrow.
