Big Book Quote
"On the other hand -- and
strange as this may seem to those who do not
understand -- once a psychic change has occurred, the very same person who seemed doomed, who had so many problems he despaired of ever solving them, suddenly finds himself easily able to control his desire for alcohol, the only effort necessary being that required to follow a few simple rules." ~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, The Doctors Opinion, pg. xxix~ |

12&12
Step Nine - "Made direct amends to such people wherever
possible, except when to do so would injure them or others."
As soon as we begin to feel confident in our new way of life and have begun, by our behavior and example, to convince those about us that we are indeed changing for the better, it is usually safe to talk in complete frankness with those who have been seriously affected, even those who may be only a little or not at all aware of what we have done to them. The only exceptions we will make will be cases where our disclosure would cause actual harm. These conversations can begin in a casual or natural way. But if no such opportunity presents itself, at some point we will want to summon all our courage, head straight for the person concerned, and lay our cards on the table. We needn't wallow in excessive remorse before those we have harmed, but amends at this level should always be forthright and generous. pp. 85-86 |

Twenty-Four Hours
A.A. Thought For The
Day
Third, alcoholics recover their proper relationship with other people. they think less about themselves and more about others. They try to help other alcoholics. They make new friends so that they're no longer lonely. They try to live a life of service instead of selfishness. All their relationships with other people are improved. They solve their personality problems by recovering their personal integrity, their faith in a Higher Power, and their way of fellowship and service to others. Is my drink problem solved as long as my personality problem is solved? Meditation For The Day All that depresses you, all that you fear, is really powerless to harm you. These things are but phantoms. So arise from earth's bonds, from depression, distrust, fear, and all that hinders your new life. Arise to beauty, joy, peace, and work inspired by love. Rise from death to life. You do not even need to fear death. All past sins are forgiven if you live and love and work with God. Let nothing hinder your new life. Seek to know more and more of that new way of living. Prayer For The Day I pray that I may let God live in me as I work for Him. I pray that I may go out into the sunlight and work with God. |

As we became subjects of King Alcohol, shivering denizens of his mad realm, the chilling vapor that is loneliness settled down. It thickened, ever becoming blacker. Daily Reflection
FREEDOM FROM "KING
ALCOHOL"
. . . let us not suppose
even for an instant that we are not
under constraint. . . . Our
former tyrant, King Alcohol,
always stands ready again
to clutch us to him Therefore,
freedom from alcohol is the
great "must" that has to be
achieved, else we go mad or
die.
AS BILL SEES IT, p. 134
When drinking, I lived in
spiritual, emotional, and
sometimes, physical
confinement. I had constructed my
prison with bars of
self-will and self-indulgence, from
which I could not escape.
Occasional dry spells that
seemed to promise freedom
would turn out to be little more
than hopes of a reprieve.
True escape required a
willingness to follow
whatever right actions were needed to
turn the lock. With that
willingness and action, both the
lock and the bars
themselves opened for me. Continued
willingness and action keep
me free—in a kind of extended
daily probation—that need
never end.

Pot Luck
The
Statue Starts to Move
When I went to rehab I resembled a statue.
Over
the years of using I had put on myself layers of protective coverings: protective
habits, protective attitudes, protective behaviors. These coverings seemed to
get me through my using life because they shielded me from most things that
would have interfered with my using, such things as a committed career or
caring relationships.
Like
a statue I became a hard surface, and what I sought out were other hard
surfaces; jobs that did not involve me, people who did not make demands on
me. My main thrust in life was to use, always to use, again and again, and my
second main thrust was to keep myself free from any entanglement that would
threaten my using. These two forces of rigidity - to drink and not bother
with anything else - made me resemble a rock-hard statue of which the only
vibrant member was an arm reaching to fill the glass again.
Now that I am in recovery, I spend a lot of time chipping away at this statue, attempting to dig out from the granite image I turned into something go the spontaneous youth that got stuck inside.
Now
and again I run into this kid. He laughs before he frowns, accepts before he
judges, says yes instead of no. When things don’t go his way he rebounds.
(He’s willing to change.) When he doesn’t know how to do something he asks
for help. When he’s afraid of the future, he trusts in God. (He’s willing to
grow.)
After
a few years in recovery I’m beginning to gain a new image of myself, a
positive image, and it still resembles a rock, only now there’s a sturdy
sapling splitting the stone apart.
Will
this sapling mature into a tree? Only if I keep chipping away at the
remaining stone, only f I keep freeing myself of the old self-protective,
self-defeating attitudes and behaviors that blocked my growth. Only if I am
willing to bend with the forces of life will I grow, and blossom and get my
roots out of the rock and back in living soil.
