Your Daily Reprieve 01.13.20

Your Daily Reprieve for Monday  January  13, 2020

From Jacksonville, FL

After joining AA , I gained a bit of weight.
A friend told me it was because
I didn't get as much exercise as I used to.
" But I never exercised while I was drinking " I protested .
" Sure you did" he countered
"the exercise program you were on had a number of routines":
Hitting the bottle
Bending the rules
Stretching the truth
Running into trouble
Jumping to conclusions
Stepping on toes
Dodging responsibilities
Pushing your luck
Carrying a grudge
Throwing fits and
Picking up the pieces.
(thanks Tory H.)

“Let the world know you as you are,
not as you think you should be,
because sooner or later, if you are posing,

Big Book Quote

"God has abundantly supplied this world with fine doctors,
psychologists, and practitioners of various kinds. Do not hesitate to take your health problems to such persons. Most of them give
freely of themselves, that their fellows may enjoy sound minds and bodies."

1662 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Step Four - "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves."

But all alcoholics who have drunk themselves out of jobs, family, and friends will need to cross-examine themselves ruthlessly to determine how their own personality defects have thus demolished their security.

pp. 51-52

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

When we were drinking, we were living an unnatural life
physically and mentally. We were punishing our bodies by
loading them with alcohol. We didn't eat enough and we
ate the wrong things. We didn't get enough sleep or the
right kind of rest. We were ruining ourselves physically.
We had an alcoholic obsession and we couldn't imagine
life without alcohol. We kept imagining all kinds of
crazy things about ourselves and about other people. We
were ruining ourselves mentally. Since I came into A.A.,
am I getting better physically and mentally?

Meditation For The Day

I believe that my life is being refined like gold in a
crucible. Gold does not stay in the crucible, only until
it is refined. I will never despair or be despondent. I
now have friends who long for me to conquer. If I should
err or fail, it would cause pain and disappointment to
them. I will keep trying to live a better life.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may always call on God's strength, while
the gold of my life is being refined. I pray that I may
see it through, with God's help.

Broad Highway

We can only clear the ground a bit. If our testimony helps sweep away prejudice, enables you to think honestly, encourages you to search diligently within yourself, then, if you wish, you can join us on the Broad Highway. With this attitude you cannot fail. The consciousness of your belief is sure to come to you.

Daily Reflection

IT DOESN'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT
We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a
daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our
spiritual condition.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 85

The most common alcoholic fantasy seems to be: "If I just
don't drink, everything will be all right." Once the fog
cleared for me, I saw—for the first time—the mess my life
had become. I had family, work, financial and legal
problems; I was hung up on old religious ideas; there were
sides of my character to which I was inclined to stay blind
because they easily could have convinced me that I was
hopeless and pushed me toward escape again. The Big
Book guided me in resolving all of my problems. But it
didn't happen overnight—and certainly not automatically—
with no effort on my part. I need always to recognize God's
mercy and blessings that shine through any problem I have
to face.

Pot Luck

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work. You don't give up…Anne Lamott

In life, the difficult periods are the best periods to gain experience and shore up determination. As a result, my mental status is much improved because of them…The Dalai Lama

Life is a process of meeting and solving problems. Solving problems is a way that we test and develop our spiritual muscle. Think of outstanding people such as Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, and Helen Keller. Lincoln faced the problem of a divided country; Gandhi, an oppressed India; Keller, her personal handicaps in being both blind and totally deaf.

In rising to meet their vision, courage, fortitude, and compassion, they became great…not in spite of, but because of their problems.

Problems often come to us in the form of crisis. The Chinese glyph for the word crisis contains two symbols; one means danger and the other opportunity. When an obstacle is before you, use it to create a beneficial result. As with Lincoln, Gandhi, and Keller, let your problems bring out your greatness.

So…here’s an example of what we’re speaking of…about three years ago, one of our home group members, 30 years sober at that time, was sitting in a meeting and got a text from the spouse…asking for a divorce…this person was  shocked…no…not shocked…speechless, without a clue as to why…then a bit later…that person’s parent died within days of signing the final divorce papers…several years have gone by…our home group member is doing the deal…working…paying bills…sponsoring…taking and enjoying vacations in Northern Italy and the US, and keeping busy with the holiday season…and chairs our noon meeting from time to time…

You see…life happens to all of us…no matter the years of sobriety or clean time…life happens…nonresistance is often the answer…it is what it is…we accept…forgive…move on…

So…my dearest ones…rather than pray for a life that is problem-free, ask for one that is solution-full. Instead of requesting that GOOD GOD remove the mountain before you…seek the strength to climb it. Remember that the best students always get the toughest problems. Love the problems you have, and their priceless solutions and gifts will be yours.

LOVE…above all things,

Patti Locascio
