Cease trying to work everything out with your minds.

It will get you nowhere.  Live by intuition and inspiration

and let your whole life be Revelation.
~Eileen Caddy

“My soul remained a mystery until my Higher Power settled inside me,

appearing to me as a very real feeling of love and caring.

Kindness slowly took precedence, and I became comfortable

with the idea that I didn’t need a drink.”

~“ Cornwall, Ontario, January 2005

Beware of the barrenness of a busy life.
~Fred Mitchell

If we do not try, we will not know.

-Ayya Khema, Be An Island

You don't have to sit on top of a mountain

to discover what's right for you.

You always know in your heart what you need to do.

~Liz Dolan

Big Book Quote

We alcoholics are undisciplined.

So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined.

Step Three - "Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him."

Practicing Step Three is like the opening of a door which to all appearances is still closed and locked. All we need is a key, and the decision to swing the door open. There is only one key, and it is called willingness. Once unlocked by willingness, the door opens almost of itself, and looking through it, we shall see a pathway beside which is an inscription. It reads: "This is the way to a faith that works." In the first two Steps we were engaged in reflection. We saw that we were powerless over alcohol, but we also perceived that faith of some kind, if only in A.A. itself, is possible to anyone. These conclusions did not require action; they required only acceptance.

p. 34

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

The A.A. program is one of submission, release, and action.
When we're drinking, we're submitting to a power greater than
ourselves, liquor. Our own wills are no use against the power
of liquor. One drink and we're sunk. In A.A. we stop submitting
to the power of liquor. Instead, we submit to a Power, also
greater than ourselves, which we call God. Have I submitted
myself to that Higher Power?

Meditation For The Day

Ceaseless activity is not God's plan for your life. Times of
withdrawal for renewed strength are always necessary. Wait for
the faintest tremor of fear and stop all work, everything, and
rest before God until you are strong again. Deal in the same way
with all tired feelings. Then you need rest of body and renewal
of spirit force. Saint Paul said: "I can do all things through
Him who strengthens me." This does not mean that you are to do
all things and then rely on God to find strength. it means that
you are to do the things you believe God wants you to do and only
then can you rely on His supply of power.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that God's spirit may be my master always. I pray that
I may learn how to rest and listen, as well as how to work.

Rewards

"The rewards of sobriety are bountiful and as progressive as the disease they counteract. Certainly among these rewards for me are release from the prison of uniqueness, and the realization that participation in the A.A. way of life is a blessing and a privilege beyond estimate - a blessing to live a life free from the pain and degradation of drinking and filled with the joy of useful, sober living, and a privilege to grow in sobriety one day at a time and bring the message of hope as it was brought to me."
From the new Fourth Edition of Alcoholics Anonymous
AA Grapevine, December 2001, p. 47

Daily Reflection

HAPPINESS IS NOT THE POINT

/ don't think happiness or unhappiness is the point. How do

we meet the problems we face? How do we best learn from

them and transmit what we have learned to others, if they

would receive the knowledge?

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 306

In my search "to be happy," I changed jobs, married and

divorced, took geographical cures, and ran myself into

debt—financially, emotionally and spiritually. In A.A., I'm

learning to grow up. Instead of demanding that people,

places and things make me happy, I can ask God for selfacceptance.

When a problem overwhelms me, A.A.'s

Twelve Steps will help me grow through the pain. The

knowledge I gain can be a gift to others who suffer with the

same problem. As Bill said, "When pain comes, we are

expected to learn from it willingly, and help others to learn.

When happiness comes, we accept it as a gift, and thank

God for it." (As Bill Sees It, p. 306)

Shouldn’t It Be Easier Than This?

It's been hard for me to accept that recovery is about progress, not perfection. I’ve been in the Program almost two years now and I am still having my share of bad days. Hey, shouldn't it be easier than this?

I came into the Program thinking if I stop using, things would be 100% better. I still think that way sometimes — all or nothing, black or white, yes or no.

When I get this way, I try to remember to quit looking for the magic. That makes my life much simpler. My doubts whether recovery is worth it are fewer. I realize that sobriety was just the first step; changing my life and how I deal with others and myself is the new hard part.

The times that are really bad are when I'm by myself too much, get into self-pity, and again think all or nothing. They say, "The alcoholic alone is in bad company.” When I get like this I think, “What's the use?” I've backed myself into a corner of self-obsession and think there's no way out. I think I can't stand life's problems anymore.

Then, suddenly the Program provides an answer and the bad times pass. In this way, I am learning to live with my (new) self.

Before I came into the Program I really had no freedom. I didn't understand the word. The only things that gave me freedom were illusions — alcohol and drugs. So what I really was, when I thought I was being free, was a prisoner. The prisoner of an active addiction who didn't know it.

I did know I was miserable, I didn't know why. I thought I was under a curse. I was in a trap and desperate to get out. That meant I was at the mercy of other people’s whims, and only knew how to be what I thought other people wanted me to be. I was always being blown around by the winds of circumstance.

The very first experience with freedom ever in my life was one someone said to me, “Do you want to stop drinking and drugging?” And I said, “Yes,” realizing that I really meant It. The second experience was when someone said to me “You never need to get wasted again.” Both these ideas had never before reached my brain and it was the first glimpse of reality and sanity for a really sick and desperate person.

The longer I stay in recovery, the more I learn about freedom. “Shouldn't it be easier than this is?” Is about freedom. Learning what’s wrong with me is freedom. Becoming willing is about freedom. Changing is about freedom. All in all, it's not easy, but it's worth it, every Step of the way.
