Your Daily Reprieve for Saturday March 23, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

Strength is a capacity for endurance.

One of the dividends of suffering is the universal discovery

that we possess a strength within us we never knew we had.

Navigating through a difficult episode not only shows us

that inner strength is there but convinces us

it will always be there to serve us in the future.

Overcoming gives us an assurance of personal confidence and value

that far exceeds what we thought we possessed

before our struggles began.

-Dennis Wholey

Many men go fishing all of their lives

without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

~Henry David Thoreau

Some people create their own storms

and then get mad when it rains.

"Faith is not being sure where you're going,

but going anyway.

A journey without maps."

Foreword

The basic principles of A.A., as they are known today, were borrowed mainly from the fields of religion and medicine, though some ideas upon which success finally depended were the result of noting the behavior and needs of the Fellowship itself.

p. 16

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Strength comes from the fellowship you find when you come
into A.A. Just being with men and women who have found
the way out gives you a feeling of security. You listen
to the speakers, you talk with other members, and you
absorb the atmosphere of confidence and hope that you
find in the place. Am I receiving strength from the fellowship
with other A.A. members?

Meditation For The Day

God is with you, to bless and help you. His spirit is all
around you. Waver not in your faith or in your prayers.
All power is the Lord's. Say that to yourself often and
steadily. Say it until your heart sings with joy for the
safety and personal power that it means to you. Say it
until the very force of the utterance drives back and
puts to naught all the evils against you. Use it as a
battle cry. All power is the Lord's. Then you will pass
on to victory over all your sins and temptations and you
will begin to live a victorious life.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that with strength from God I may lead an abundant
life. I pray that I may lead a life of victory.

Touchstones

"All A.A. progress can be reckoned in terms of just two words: humility and responsibility. Our whole spiritual development can be accurately measured by our degree of adherence to these magnificent standards. Ever deepening humility, accompanied by an ever greater willingness to accept and act upon clear-cut obligations - these are truly our touchstones for all growth in the life of the spirit. They hold up to us the very essence of right being and right doing. It is by them that we are enabled to find and to do God's will."

Daily Reflection

. . AND NO MORE RESERVATIONS

We have seen the truth again and again: "Once an alcoholic,

always an alcoholic.". . . If we are planning to stop

drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind, nor any

lurking notion that someday we will be immune to alcohol.

. . . To be gravely affected, one does not necessarily have

to drink a long time nor take the quantities some of us have.

This is particularly true of women. Potential female alcoholics

often turn into the real thing and are gone beyond

recall in a few years.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 33

These words are underlined in my book. They are true for

men and women alcoholics. On many occasions I've turned

to this page and reflected on this passage. I need never fool

myself by recalling my sometimes differing drinking

patterns, or by believing I am "cured." I like to think that, if

sobriety is God's gift to me, then my sober life is my gift to

God. I hope God is as happy with His gift as I am with

mine.

Quote of the Week

"Humility is not thinking less about yourself, but rather thinking about yourself less."

I used to look down on people who were humble. They won’t ever get anywhere, I used to think. It’s a dog-eat-dog world, and if I wanted to succeed I had to be aggressive and take the things I wanted. When I combined alcohol with this attitude, my ego exploded, and my thirst for both success and drink was insatiable. Soon I was a pariah, shunned even by some of my closest friends.

In the program, while I was recovering from my disease, I heard a lot about humility. Rather than be open to the concept, my ego rebelled at the thought of it. I can still remember arguing about it with my sponsor. “If I’m humble, I’ll be a nothing. People will take advantage of me, and I’ll never get ahead,” I whined. And that’s when he defined it, according to the program. He told me, “Humility isn’t thinking less about yourself, but rather it’s thinking about yourself less.” That was an aha moment for me.

The truth beneath this explanation has deepened for me over the years. What I have discovered is that I am much happier, have more freedom, and am more peaceful when I am thinking less about myself. In fact, the more focused on others I become, the more serenity I have. Today, whenever I find that I am anxious or upset, chances are I’m thinking too much about myself. The solution is simple: I seek humility by looking for ways to be of service. When I do, serenity returns to my life.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders, that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
