From Waynesville, NC

Humility is the highest of all virtues.

You can destroy your egotism by developing this virtue alone.

You can influence people.

You can become a magnet to attract the world.

It must be genuine. Feigned humility is hypocrisy.
~Robert Collier

Neither genius, fame, nor love

show the greatness of the soul.

Only kindness can do that.
~Jean Baptiste Henri Lacordaire

"There is no point in using the word 'impossible'

to describe something that has clearly happened."

~Douglas Adams

They have the right to criticize who have the heart to help.

Big Book Quote

Both you and the new man must walk day by day in the path of spiritual progress. If you persist, remarkable things will happen.

Foreword

A.A.”s Twelve Steps are a group of principles, spiritual in their nature, which, if practiced as a way of life, can expel the obsession to drink and enable the sufferer to become happily and usefully whole.

p. 15

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

When we were drinking, we used to worry about the future.
Worry is terrible mental punishment. What's going to
become of me? Where will I end up? In the gutter or the
sanitarium? We can see ourselves slipping, getting worse
and worse, and we wonder what the finish will be.
Sometimes we get so discouraged in thinking about the
future that we toy with the idea of suicide. In A.A.
have I stopped worrying about the future?

Meditation For The Day

Functioning on a material plane alone takes me away from
God. I must also try to function on a spiritual plane.
Functioning on a spiritual plane as well as on a material
plane will make life what it should be. All material
activities are valueless in themselves alone. But all
activities, seemingly trivial or of seemingly great moment,
are all alike if directed by God's guidance. I must try to
obey God as I would expect a faithful, willing servant to
carry out directions.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that the flow of God's spirit may come to me through
many channels. I pray that I may function on a spiritual
plane as well as on a material plane.

The Group

"Over the years, every conceivable deviation from our Twelve Steps and Traditions have been tried. That was sure to be, since we are so largely a band of ego-driven individuals. Children of chaos, we have defiantly played with every brand of fire, only to emerge unharmed and, we think, wiser. These very deviations created a vast process of trial and error, which, under the grace of God, has brought us to where we stand today . . . We saw that the group, exactly like the individual, must eventually conform to whatever tested principles would guarantee survival."
c.1952 AAWS
Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 146

Daily Reflection

LOVE AND TOLERANCE

Love and tolerance of others is our code.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 84

I have found that I have to forgive others in all situations to

maintain any real spiritual progress. The vital importance

of forgiving may not be obvious to me at first sight, but my

studies tell me that every great spiritual teacher has insisted

strongly upon it.

I must forgive injuries, not just in words, or as a matter

of form, but in my heart. I do this not for the other persons'

sake, but for my own sake. Resentment, anger, or a desire

to see someone punished, are things that rot my soul. Such

things fasten my troubles to me with chains. They tie me to

other problems that have nothing to do with my original

problem.

Spiritual Rather Than Religious

People who are recovering from alcohol and/or other addictions through Twelve Step programs hear phrases such as “the spiritual part of the program” or ”this is a spiritual program”.

Twelve Step programs clearly separate themselves from religions, yet, are equally clear in proclaiming to be spiritual programs. What does it mean to be “spiritual rather than religious”?

One simple way of understanding spirituality is to see that it is concerned with our ability, through our attitude and actions, to relate to others, to ourselves and to God, as we understand him.

All of us, addicted or not, have a way of relating to our own lives, other people, and to God which tends either to be positive, healthy, fulfilling, life-giving, or tend to the negative, self-defeating, and destructive. The question is not if we are spiritual, but are we moving in the direction of a negative or positive spirituality.

Spirituality is a simple way of living. It seems there are four basic movements that recovering people need to put their lives on a spiritual basis. The first of these is a movement from fear to trust; the second from self-pity to gratitude; the third from resentment to acceptance; and the fourth from dishonesty to honesty.
