BIG BOOK QUOTE

Each person is like an actor who wants to run the whole show; is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet, the scenery and the rest of the players in his own way.

Foreword

There is, too, a rising interest in the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. Students of human relations are beginning to wonder how and why A.A. functions as a society. Why is it, they ask, that in A.A. no member can be set in personal authority over another, that nothing like a central government can anywhere be seen? How can a set of traditional principles, having no legal force at all, hold the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous in unity and effectiveness? The second section of this volume, though designed for A.A.'s membership, will give such inquirers an inside view of A.A. never before possible.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

We can depend on those members of any group who have gone all out
for the program. They come to meetings. They work with other
alcoholics. We don't have to worry about their slipping. They're loyal
members of the group. I'm trying to be a loyal member of the group.
When I'm tempted to take a drink, I tell myself that if I did I'd be letting
down the other members who are the best friends I have. Am I going to
let them down, if I can help it?

Meditation For The Day

Wherever there is true fellowship and love between people, God's spirit
is always there as the Divine Third. In all human relationships, the
Divine Spirit is what brings them together. When a life is changed
through the channel of another person, it is God, the Divine Third, who
always makes the change, using the person as a means. The moving
power behind all spiritual things, all personal relationships between
people is God, the Divine Third, who is always there. No personal
relationships can be entirely right without the presence of God's spirit.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may be used as a channel by God's spirit. I pray that I may
feel that the Divine Third is always there to help me.

Faith

W
e had seen spiritual release, but liked to tell ourselves it wasn't true. Actually, we were fooling ourselves, for deep down in every man, woman, and child, is the fundamental idea of God. It may be obscured by calamity, by pomp, by worship of other things, but in some form or other it is there. For faith in a Power greater than ourselves, and miraculous demonstrations of that power in human lives, are facts as old as man himself.

DAILY REFLECTIONS

A NEW SENSE OF BELONGING

Until we had talked with complete candor of our conflicts,

and had listened to someone else do the same thing, we still

didn't belong.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 57

After four years in A.A. I was able to discover the freedom

from the burden of buried emotions that had caused me so

much pain. With the help of A.A., and extra counseling, the

pain was released and I felt a complete sense of belonging

and peace. I also felt a joy and a love of God that I had

never experienced before. I am in awe of the power of Step

Five.

POT LUCK

"Decide what kind of day you’re going to have, then start it."

I used to let circumstances dictate my mood and how my day was going to go. I’d wake up, quickly survey all the bad things in my life, and then decide how bad the day was going to be. As I went through the morning, and then the day, it was easy to find evidence supporting how awful the day and my life were. Toward the end of the day, I couldn’t wait to start drinking to get some relief. And often that only made the day worse.

I’ll never forget sitting in a meeting in early recovery and hearing someone share a solution to this kind of thinking. She said simply that if you found yourself having a bad morning, or even a bad day, you could start your day over. She said that what you do is stop and get quiet, and say a prayer asking your Higher Power to restore you to sanity. After that, it helps to either write or mentally make a quick gratitude list. Finally, you spend the rest of that day looking for opportunities to be of service.

Like most things in the program, this sounded too simple to work for me, but I was willing to try it. With a little practice—meaning sometimes I had to restart my day five or six times—I got better and better at it. And again, like most things in the program, it works when I work it. Today, I realize that I don’t have to let circumstances dictate what kind of day or life I’m going to have. Instead, I can decide to have a good day, and when I do, I always find or create the evidence to support it.
