Discernment is not knowing
the difference between right and wrong; it is knowing the
difference between right and almost right. We think fear, anger, divine intimidation,
threat, and punishment are going to lead people to
love. We cannot lead people to
the highest level of motivation by teaching them the
lowest. God always and forever models the highest, and our
task is merely to “imitate God.” “Take time for solitude. How else can you
contemplate the blessings of recovery,” “What we must realize is
that we cannot see everything. We do not know everything.
More important, we must understand that it
is impossible for us to control anything. The process of life is a
spiritual one, governed by invisible, intangible spiritual laws
and principles.” |

BIG
BOOK QUOTE We missed the reality and the beauty of the forest because we
were diverted by the ugliness of some of its trees. We never gave the
spiritual side of life a fair hearing. P50 |

Twenty-Four Hours A.A. Thought For The Day

Daily Thought ^*^*^*^*^ (\ ~~ /) ( \(AA)/ ) (_ /AA\ _) / AA \ ^*^*^*^*^ Motives We were depressed and complained we felt bad, when in fact
we were mainly asking for sympathy and attention. This odd trait of mind
and emotion, this perverse wish to hide a bad motive underneath a
good one, permeates human affairs from top to bottom. This subtle
and elusive kind of self-righteousness can underlie the smallest act or
thought. Learning daily to spot, admit, and correct these flaws is
the essence of character building and good living. An honest regret for
harms done, a genuine gratitude for blessings received, and a
willingness to try for better things tomorrow will be the permanent
assets we shall seek. c. 1952 AAWS Thought to Consider . . . The best things in life aren't things

DAILY
REFLECTIONS LOOKING
WITHIN Made a
searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. TWELVE STEPS
AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 42 Step Four is
the vigorous and painstaking effort to discover what the
liabilities in each of us have been, and are. I want to find
exactly how, when, and where my natural desires have warped
me. I wish to look squarely at the unhappiness this has
caused others and myself. By discovering what my emotional
deformities are, I can move toward their correction. Without a
willing and persistent effort to do this, there can be
little sobriety or contentment for me. To resolve
ambivalent feelings, I need to feel a strong and helpful
sense of myself. Such an awareness doesn't happen
overnight, and no one's self-awareness is permanent.
Everyone has the capacity for growth, and for self-awareness,
through an honest encounter with reality. When I don't
avoid issues but meet them directly, always trying to
resolve them, they become fewer and fewer. |

POT LUCK "If I just had more,
better, different, I’d be okay." Before I had a program, I was
always searching for something outside of myself to make me feel okay. I was
sure that if I could only get more money, a better job, or a different
relationship, or if I lived in a different house in a different neighborhood,
then I would finally feel better about myself. When none of these things
worked, I concentrated on drinking more, getting better quality wines, or
trying different types of premium alcohol. In the end, this didn’t work
either.
