Holiness does not usually arrive with thunder and lightning.

The holiest moments of our lives are rarely public.

They happen in seconds that no one sees.
~Jonathan Sacks

“I am glad for everything that has happened to me.

I have found a way of life that I wouldn’t trade

for anything in the world.”

~Magnolia, Arkansas, January 1978

“I spent years looking for things to alienate me,

make me different, make me special or unique, better or worse ...

I was taught through the Steps to start dwelling on the positive –

the ‘alikeness’ instead of the differences.”

~Grants, New Mexico, July 1980

are often disguised as painful endings."

Lao Tzu

BIG BOOK QUOTE

I was not too well at the time, and was plagued by waves of self-pity and resentment. This sometimes nearly drove me back to drink, but I soon found that when all other measures failed, work with another alcoholic would save the day.

Tradition Nine - "A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve."

WHEN Tradition Nine was first written, it said that "Alcoholics Anonymous needs that least possible organization." In years since then, we have changed our minds about that. Today, we are able to say with assurance that Alcoholics Anonymous--A.A. as a whole--should never be organized at all. Then, in seeming contradiction, we proceed to create special service boards and committees which in themselves are organized. How, then, can we have an unorganized movement which can and does create a service organization for itself? Scanning this puzzler, people say, "What do they mean, no organization?"

Twenty-Four Hours

 A.A. Thought For The Day

When we were drinking, we used to be ashamed of the past. Remorse
is terrible mental punishment: ashamed of ourselves for the things
we've said and done, afraid to face people because of what they might
think of us, afraid of the consequences of what we did when we were
drunk. In A.A. we forget about the past. Do I believe that God has
forgiven me for everything I've done in the past, no matter how black
it was, provided I'm honestly trying to do the right thing today?

Meditation For The Day

God's spirit is all about you all day long. You have no thoughts, no
plans, no impulses, no emotions, that He does not know about. You can
hide nothing from Him. Do not make your conduct conform only to
that of the world and do not depend on the approval or disapproval of
others. God sees in secret, but He rewards openly. If you are in
harmony with the Divine Spirit, doing your best to live the way you
believe God wants you to live, you will be at peace.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may always feel God's presence. I pray that I may realize
this Presence constantly all through the day.

Resentments

Few people have been more victimized by resentments than have we alcoholics. It mattered little whether our resentments were justified or not. A burst of temper could spoil a day, and a well - nursed grudge could make us miserably ineffective. Nor were we ever skillful in separating justified from unjustified anger. As we saw it, our wrath was always justified. Anger, that occasional luxury of more balanced people, could keep us on an emotional jag indefinitely. These emotional "dry benders" often led straight to the bottle. Other kinds of disturbance - jealousy, envy, self-pity, or hurt pride - did the same thing.

c. 1952 AAWS, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 90

Thought to Consider . . .

Anger is the hot wind that extinguishes the light of reason.

DAILY REFLECTIONS

PRAYER: IT WORKS

It has been well said that "almost the only scoffers at

prayer are those who never tried it enough."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 97

Having grown up in an agnostic household, I felt somewhat

foolish when I first tried praying. I knew there was a

Higher Power working in my life—how else was I staying

sober?—but I certainly wasn't convinced he/she/it wanted

to hear my prayers. People who had what I wanted said

prayer was an important part of practicing the program, so I

persevered. With a commitment to daily prayer, I was

amazed to find myself becoming more serene and

comfortable with my place in the world. In other words, life

became easier and less of a struggle. I'm still not sure who,

or what, listens to my prayers, but I'd never stop saying

them for the simple reason that they work.

POT LUCK

To know what is right
and not do it is the
worst cowardice.
`Confucius

Today's Meditation:

I've been a coward.  Much more than I'd like to admit, actually.  There have been many times in my life when I've known that something was right, but I've taken a different path for whatever reason.  As a kid, I remember saying hurtful things about other kids because I was trying to impress someone.  A few times when I've been desperate, I've taken money that didn't really belong to me.  Most of these things happened when I was very young, but they've stuck with me all through the years.

I don't beat myself up about what I've done--I simply acknowledge it and hope that the lessons that I've learned from not doing what was right will stick with me and guide me through the next decisions that I have to make that may present me with a similar dilemma--do what's right, or do what's expedient (or what will make someone else happy, or will bring gain to me, and on and on).

There's much that could be said about cowardice, but Confucius' main point here is not cowardice.  His main focus is knowing what is right and not doing it.  Hearing your conscience speak to you and not following it.  Seeing the high road but following the low road.  No matter which words you want to use to describe it, the bottom line is that our lives are full of choices between right and wrong, and if we truly want to make something special of our lives we need to be prepared always to follow the right, no matter what the consequences.

I want to avoid being a coward, not because I fear being called that name, but because I know that my cowardice is me not being the person I'm supposed to be.  My sincere hope in life is that no matter what happens, I'm able to recognize the right path and follow it, for my sake and the sakes of everyone else who may be involved in anything that I do.

The truth of the matter is that you always know
the right thing to do.  The hard part is doing it.
`H. Norman Schwarzkopf
