BIG BOOK QUOTE

Our book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answers will come, if your own house is in order.

Tradition Seven - "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

There was another reason for our collective poverty. It was soon apparent that while alcoholics would spend lavishly on Twelfth Step cases, they had a terrific aversion to dropping money into a meeting-place hat for group purposes. We were astounded to find that we were as tight as the bark on a tree. So A.A., the movement, started and stayed broke, while its individual members waxed prosperous.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Now we can take an inventory of the good things that have
come to us through A.A. To begin with, we're sober today.
That's the biggest asset on any alcoholic's books.
Sobriety to us is like good-will in business. Everything
else depends on that. Most of us have jobs, which we owe
to our sobriety. We know we couldn't hold these jobs if
we were drinking, so our jobs depend on our sobriety.
Most of us have families, wives and children, which either
we had lost or might have lost, if we hadn't stopped
drinking. We have friends in A.A., real friends who are
always ready to help us. Do I realize that my job, my family
and my real friends are dependent upon my sobriety?

Meditation For The Day

I must trust God to the best of my ability. This lesson
has to be learned. My doubts and fears continually drive
me back into the wilderness. Doubts lead me astray, because
I am not trusting God. I must trust God's love. It will
never fail me, but I must learn not to fail it by my doubts
and fears. We all have much to learn in turning out fear by
faith. All our doubts arrest God's work through us. I must
not doubt. I must believe in God and continually work at
strengthening my faith.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may live the way God wants me to live. I pray
that I may get into that stream of goodness in the world.

Alternatives

If you are as seriously alcoholic as we were, we believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution. We were in a position where life was becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives. One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could, and the other, to accept spiritual help. This we did because we honestly wanted to, and were willing to make the effort.

DAILY REFLECTIONS

GUIDANCE

. . . this means a belief in a Creator who is all power,

justice, and love; a God who intends for me a purpose, a

meaning, and a destiny to grow, however . . . haltingly,

toward His own likeness and image.

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 51

As I began to understand my own powerlessness and my

dependence on God, as I understand Him, I began to see

that there was a life which, if I could have it, I would have

chosen for myself from the beginning. It is through the

continuing work of the Steps and the life in the Fellowship

that I've learned to see that there is truly a better way into

which I am being guided. As I come to know more about

God, I am able to trust His ways and His plans for the

development of His character in me. Quickly or not so

quickly, I grow toward His own image and likeness.

POT LUCK

"All that pain has value."

When I came into the rooms, I was buried in shame. Without alcohol to escape into, I was overwhelmed with remorse over many of my actions. As I moved toward working the Fourth Step, I was desperately afraid of what I would find in the abyss of self. I was sure that once I uncovered how bad I really was, no one—including myself—would accept me. I was definitely at a jumping-off place.

As I began putting my inventories together, I discovered something else, though. Yes, I had acted poorly and had made many selfish decisions, but I learned that much of my behavior had been driven by the disease of alcoholism. What I found was that my actions weren’t necessarily who I was; they were just my actions. And if I was willing to own those actions, make amends, and stay sober, then I could recover through working the Twelve Steps.

As I continued to uncover, discover, and discard my character defects, I found something even more important. I learned that all my experiences, especially the “bad” ones I felt shame over, would turn out to be the most useful in reaching out to and helping others. I learned that my pain was often the key that allowed others to come to terms with and overcome their own pain. All the experiences I had tried to run from had value, and in God’s hands they uniquely qualified me to be of service to His other children. Today, I no longer wish to shut the door on my past, nor on my pain.
