“Truth ... cut the shackles that once bound us to alcohol.

It continues to release us from conflicts and miseries beyond reckoning;

it banishes fear and isolation.”

AA Co-Founder, Bill W., August 1961

I love to think of nature as unlimited broadcasting stations,

through which God speaks to us every day, every hour,

and every moment of our lives,

if we will only tune in and remain so.
~George Washington Carver

I am not what I ought to be,

I am not what I want to be,

I am not what I hope to be in another world;

but still I am not what I once used to be,

and by the grace of God I am what I am.
~John Newton

‘I don’t have time to help you stay sick ...

but if you want to get better I’d be glad to help.”

Tradition Four - "Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole."

When A.A. was still young, lots of eager groups were forming. In a town we'll call Middleton, a real crackerjack had started up. The townspeople were as hot as firecrackers about it. Stargazing, the elders dreamed of innovations. They figured the town needed a great big alcoholic center, a kind of pilot plant A.A. groups could duplicate everywhere. Beginning on the ground floor there would be a club; in the second story they would sober up drunks and hand them currency for the back debts; the third deck would house an educational project - quite noncontroversial, of course. In imagination the gleaming center was to go up several stories more, but three would do for a start. This would all take a lot of money - other people's money. Believe it or not, wealthy townsfolk bought the idea.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Alcoholics are people whose drinking got them into a "blind alley."
They haven't been able to learn anything from their drinking
experiences. They are always making the same mistakes and suffering
the same consequences over and over again. They refuse to admit
they're alcoholic. They still think they can handle the stuff. They won't
swallow their pride and admit that they're different from ordinary
drinkers. They won't face the fact that they must spend the rest of their
lives without liquor. They can't visualize life without ever taking a
drink. Am I out of this blind alley?

Meditation For The Day

I believe that God has all power. It is His to give and His to withhold.
But He will not withhold it from the person who dwells near Him,
because then it passes insensibly from God to that person. It is
breathed in by the person who lives in God's presence. I will learn to
live in God's presence and then I will have those things which I desire
of Him: strength, power, and joy. God's power is available to all who
need it and are willing to accept it.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may get myself out of the way, so that God's power may
flow in. I pray that I may surrender myself to that power.

Honesty

"I know the biggest word for me in A.A. is 'honesty.' I don't believe this program would work for me if I didn't get honest with myself about everything. Honesty is the easiest word for me to understand because it is the exact opposite of what I've been doing all my life. Therefore, it will be the hardest to work on. But I will never be totally honest - that would make me perfect, and none of us can claim to be perfect. Only God is. If I work on it every day, it will be easier to be honest with myself. Then getting and staying honest with other people will come automatically. I know I will be grateful for a chance to make amends to everybody I have hurt in the past."

DAILY REFLECTIONS

HAVING FUN YET?

. . . we aren't a glum lot. If newcomers could see no joy or

fun in our existence, they wouldn't want it. We absolutely

insist on enjoying life. We try not to indulge in cynicism

over the state of the nations, nor do we carry the world's

troubles on our shoulders

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 132

When my own house is in order, I find the different parts of

my life are more manageable. Stripped from the guilt and

remorse that cloaked my drinking years, I am free to

assume my proper role in the universe, but this condition

requires maintenance. I should stop and ask myself, Am I

having fun yet? If I find answering that question difficult or

painful, perhaps I'm taking myself too seriously—and finding

it difficult to admit that I've strayed from my practice of

working the program to keep my house in order. I think the

pain I experience is one way my Higher Power has to get

my attention, coaxing me to take stock of my performance.

The slight time and effort it takes to work the program—a

spot-check inventory, for example, or the making of

amends, whatever is appropriate—are well worth the effort.

POT LUCK

"If I’m not the problem, then there is no solution."

When I came into the program, I had a lot of problems, and most of them were your fault. My girlfriend didn’t understand me, my boss didn’t appreciate me, the police didn’t like it when I drove after just a few drinks (I was fine!), and on and on. If everyone would just get off my back, then I’d be fine, I thought. After a while, I felt like the whole world was against me.

As I began working the program, I was introduced to the Fourth Step and was instructed to make a searching and fearless moral inventory. My sponsor showed me how to make a list of all the persons and institutions I resented. Finally, I could document how I had been wronged. Perfect! I thought. But then he slipped in a fourth column called “my part” and told me to include my role in all my resentments and interactions. Now, that was unfair, I thought.

With his help, however, and my willingness to be fearless and thorough, I was able to see that I did have a part in them all. And what a gift that turned out to be. I discovered that if it was all your fault—and I certainly couldn’t control or change you—then I would forever be a victim, and nothing would change. But if I took responsibility for my part, which was something I could control and change, then I was released from the bondage of resentment and was finally free to live a new and better life. Today, I understand the wisdom in this quote and choose to keep my side of the street clean.
