Your Daily Reprieve for Thursday February 20,  2025

From Fernandina Beach, FL

“While I’ve never been sober today before,

I count on my Higher Power to keep me sober

as he has done on all those other days before.”

~ Huntington, West Virginia, August 2006

Today expect something good to happen to you

no matter what occurred yesterday.

Realize the past no longer holds you captive.

It can only continue to hurt you if you hold on to it.

Let the past go.

A simply abundant world awaits.

-Sarah Ban Breathnach

What happened in the past that was painful

has a great deal to do with what we are today,

but revisiting this painful past can contribute

little or nothing to what we need to do now.

-William Glasser

If the he only miracle we are looking for is the big one...

then we will most likely miss the other miracles

that are unfolding before our very eyes,

each and every day."

~Wayne Charlton.

Big Book Quote

We took stock honestly. First, we searched out the flaws in our make-up which caused our failure. Being convinced that self, manifested in various ways, was what had defeated us, we considered its common manifestations.

Step Two - "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity."

"As psychiatrists have often observed, defiance is the outstanding characteristic of many an alcoholic. So it's not strange that lots of us have had our day at defying God Himself. Sometimes it's because God has not delivered us the good things of life which we specified, as a greedy child makes an impossible list for Santa Claus. More often, though, we had met up with some major calamity, and to our way of thinking lost out because God deserted us. The girl we wanted to marry had other notions; we prayed God that she'd change her mind, but she didn't. We prayed for healthy children, and were presented with sick ones, or none at all. We prayed for promotions at business, and none came. Loved ones, upon whom we heartily depended, were taken from us by so-called acts of God. Then we became drunkards, and asked God to stop that. But nothing happened. This was the unkindest cut of all. `Damn this faith business!' we said.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Liquor used to be my friend. I used to have a lot of fun
drinking. Practically all the fun I had was connected
with drinking. But the time came when liquor became my
enemy. I don't know just when liquor turned against me
and became my enemy, but I know it happened, because I
began to get into trouble. And since I realize that liquor
is now my enemy, my main business now is keeping sober.
Making a living or keeping a house is no longer my main
business. It's secondary to the business of keeping sober.
Do I realize that my main business is keeping sober?

Meditation For The Day

I can depend on God to supply me with all the power I need
to face any situation, provided that I will sincerely
believe in that power and honestly ask for it, at the same
time making all my life conform to what I believe God wants
me to be. I can come to God as a business manager would
come to the owner of the business, knowing that to lay the
matter before Him means immediate cooperation, provided the
matter has merit.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may believe that God is ready and willing to
supply me with all that I need. I pray that I may ask only
for faith and strength to meet any situation.

Belonging

"Perhaps one of the greatest rewards of meditation and prayer is the sense of belonging that comes to us. We no longer live in a completely hostile world. We are no longer lost and frightened and purposeless. The moment we catch even a glimpse of God's will, the moment we begin to see truth, justice, and love as the real and eternal things in life, we are no longer deeply disturbed by all the seeming evidence to the contrary that surrounds us in purely human affairs."
c. 1952 AAWS, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 105

Daily Reflection

THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER

At this juncture, his A.A. sponsor usually laughs.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 26

Before my recovery from alcoholism began, laughter was

one of the most painful sounds I knew. I never laughed and

I felt that anyone else's laughter was directed at me! My

self-pity and anger denied me the simplest of pleasures or

lightness of heart. By the end of my drinking not even

alcohol could provoke a drunken giggle in me.

When my A.A. sponsor began to laugh and point out my

self-pity and ego-feeding deceptions, I was annoyed and

hurt, but it taught me to lighten up and focus on my

recovery. I soon learned to laugh at myself and eventually I

taught those I sponsor to laugh also. Every day I ask God to

help me stop taking myself too seriously.

The Down to Earth Nature of Spirituality

If a drinker had asked me, back when I was drinking, what spirituality meant to me, I probably would have made some dumb remark about my glass of scotch. The effects of the spirits on my brain. If a sober person, someone like a teacher or a priest or a civic leader, had asked me about spirituality I would have made an elaborately pious explanation, something like giving away all that I have and going to the desert where I would only have lizards for company.

It would never occur to me to say that spirituality was making coffee for a bunch of drunks. I couldn’t have imagined spirituality by saying I was going to listen to another guy tell me where he thought he had gone wrong in his life. “What did I have to do with another guy’s mistakes?” I would have said.

“I am individual who has got a hell of a lot of his own problems. So come on, don't bother me with someone else’s troubles. And for God’s sake give me a drink.”

For God’s sake these days I spend a lot of time every week listening to other people’s problems, and other people’s solutions. I do this listening in meetings, I do this listening when I get together with my sponsor, I do this listening when I go for coffee with friends. I do this listening when I read the Big Book or the Twelve and Twelve, or other recovery literature. I do this listening when I read anything anybody else has written about getting through this life, and learning from this life, and becoming willing to learn, and change and grow.

I do this listening at work ( how is Peg dealing with her son today?), I do this listening when I sit down in front of the TV ( how do people in sitcoms manage to be friends again after having made such fool of themselves?), I do this listening when I read the paper or a magazine. I do this listening when I am taking part in life.

And that’s what spirituality is. For me. Taking part in life. That’s what spirituality has to be for me. Always being there. Always being present. Always listening in. Always acting in. Always sharing. Always being willing to do all of the above.

I need people. I am a crummy human being when I am alone. I start living in my head instead of living in my heart. I start making things up instead of living stuff out. I start living exactly as when I was drinking, thinking I can do everything and thinking I can do nothing, imagining myself alternately God and worm…

When what I really am is a struggling human being, a man who needs the company of other men and women, who needs to hear what other people have to say, who has to learn how other people get through life, who has to come to an understanding and an acceptance, of his own human condition.

In the long run that’s the definition of spirituality that works best for me. Accepting life on life's terms. Accepting the beauty of the reality about me. And thanking God, and my fellows, for that reality every day.
