Your Daily Reprieve for Friday August 30, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

Humankind is interdependent,

and the happiness of each depends upon the happiness of all,

and it is this lesson that humanity has to learn today

as the first and last lesson.

~Hazrat Inayat Khan

'To be without some of the things you want

is an indispensable part of happiness.' ~Bertrand Russell

“A life lived with integrity

– even if it lacks the trappings of fame and fortune-

is a shining star in whose light others may follow

in the years to come.”

~Denis Waitley

When you pray, remember that you are not praying to a distant God,

but to the God that dwells within you.

Don’t just speak the words; feel what they mean in your life.

Don’t pray from your lips, but from your heart.

Your prayers aren’t for God, they are for you,

to remind you of the presence of the Holy Spirit within you.

When you say “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,”

remember that you are loved and protected.

God has planned greater things for us than we can imagine.

The more we maintain an awareness of God’s unchanging love,

the safer and more at home we will feel in the world.

-Susan L. Taylor

Big Book Quote

Thus was I convinced that God is concerned with us humans when we want Him enough. At long last I saw, I felt, I believed. Scales of pride and prejudice fell from my eyes. A new world came into view.

Step Nine - "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others."

This atmosphere of approval and praise is apt to be so exhilarating as to put us off balance by creating an insatiable appetite for more of the same. Or we may be tipped over in the other direction when, in rare cases, we get a cool and skeptical reception. This will tempt us to argue, or to press our point insistently. Or maybe it will tempt us to discouragement and pessimism. But if we have prepared ourselves well in advance, such reactions will not deflect us from our steady and even purpose.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

"Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure
immunity from drinking as extensive work with other alcoholics.
Carry the message to other alcoholics. You can help when no one
else can. You can secure their confidence when others fail. Life
will take on new meaning for you. To watch people recover, to see
them help others in turn, to watch loneliness vanish, to see a
fellowship grow about you, to have a host of friends, this is an
experience you must not miss." Am I always ready and willing to help
other alcoholics?

Meditation For The Day

One secret of abundant living is the art of giving. The paradox of
life is that the more you give, the more you have. If you loose your
life in the service of others, you will save it. You can give
abundantly and still live abundantly. You are rich in one respect – you
have a spirit that is inexhaustible. Let no mean or selfish thought
keep you from sharing this spirit. Of love, of help, of
understanding, and of sympathy, give and keep giving. Give your
personal ease and comfort, your time, your money, and most of all,
yourself. And you will be living abundantly.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may live to give. I pray that I may learn this secret of
abundant living.

Traditions

"The Twelve Traditions point straight at many of our individual defects. By implication they ask each of us to lay aside pride and resentments. They ask for personal as well as group sacrifice. They ask us never to use the A.A. name in any quest for personal power or distinction or money. The Traditions guarantee the equality of all members and the independence of all groups. They show how we may best relate ourselves to each other and to the world outside."
Bill W.,
1967 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, p. 96

Daily Reflection

THE ONLY REQUIREMENT . . .

"At one time . . . every A. A. group had many membership

rules. Everybody was scared witless that something or

somebody would capsize the boat. . . . The total list was a

mile long. If all those rules had been in effect everywhere,

nobody could have possibly joined A.A. at all, . . . "

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, pp. 139-40

I'm grateful that the Third Tradition only requires of me a

desire to stop drinking. I had been breaking promises for

years. In the Fellowship I didn't have to make promises, I

didn't have to concentrate. It only required my attending

one meeting, in a foggy condition, to know I was home. I

didn't have to pledge undying love. Here, strangers hugged

me. "It gets better," they said, and "One day at a time, you

can do it." They were no longer strangers, but caring

friends. I ask God to help me to reach out to people desiring

sobriety, and to, please, keep me grateful!

Pot Luck

"God can’t give you anything new until you let go of the old."

I hate change. For some reason I’m convinced that things will get worse if they change, and even if things aren’t so good now, I’d rather they stay the same than risk a change. I was told when I came into the program that I would only have to change one thing, and I was relieved to hear that. But then they told me that one thing was everything! I quickly realized that the first thing I needed to change was my attitude about change.

A good friend of mine in the program has a different view on change. She says that you can’t know what you don’t know. “How many times do things get better after they change?” she asked me. When I thought about this and looked at my experience, I found that they almost always get better. “Then why not look at change as a chance for improvement and turn the results over to your Higher Power?” she suggested.

The more I follow my friend’s advice, the easier it is for me to handle change. A couple of days ago my wireless router went out, and it felt like the end of the world. After I calmed down, it occurred to me that I might get a more powerful router and actually have improved wireless coverage in my home. Now that was a change! These days when things change, I ask myself how they have improved or how I can make them better. Once I put my focus here, I find it’s easier to let go and even look forward to change. What I’ve learned is that God can’t give me anything new until I let go of the old.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference

regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders,

that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience

from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
