Your Daily Reprieve for Thursday February 1, 2024

From Waynesville, NC

People who love themselves

come across as very loving, generous and kind;

they express their self-confidence through humility,

forgiveness and inclusiveness.
~Sanaya Roman

Don’t let the opinions of other people

determine the image you have of yourself.

There is no need to feel either appreciated or understood.

Be even-minded.  What you think about yourself is everything.

What others think about you has no value at all,

unless you choose to give it value.

-Shantidasa

Lose all your concepts about religion and spirituality and love.

Be simple, be humble, and be happy in your way; let no one

tell you that this is the right way and that is the wrong way.

However you feel—whatever brings you peace and joy—is

the correct way for you. Continue in that way and you’ll see

the bliss get stronger. You’ll see the peace get stronger.

It is very simple.

-- Swami Sai Premananda

“Do I really want ... to be bitter, hostile, and judgmental?

Do I want to live inside that sort of person?

Wouldn’t I rather forgive, make allowances, understand?

Is self-pity, feeling abused, so precious

that I will not trade it for self-liking?”

~Grapevine: Key West, Fla., February 1973

Big Book Quote

"We families of Alcoholics Anonymous keep few skeletons in the closet. Everyone knows about the others' alcoholic troubles. This is a condition which, in ordinary life, would produce untold grief; there might be scandalous gossip, laughter at the expense of other

people, and a tendency to take advantage of intimate information. Among us, these are rare occurrences. We do talk about each other a great deal, but we almost invariably temper such talk by a spirit of love and tolerance."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, The Family Afterward, pg. 125~

Tradition Eight - "Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers."

Take the case of the club janitor and cook. If a club is going to function, it has to be habitable and hospitable. We tried volunteers, who were quickly disenchanted with sweeping floors and brewing coffee seven days a week. They just didn't show up. Even more important, an empty club couldn't answer its telephone, but it was an open invitation to a drunk on a binge who possessed a spare key. So somebody had to look after the place full time. If we hired an alcoholic, he'd receive only what we'd have to pay a nonalcoholic for the same job. The job was not to do Twelfth Step work; it was to make Twelfth Step work possible. It was a service proposition, pure and simple.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

When we think about having a drink, we're thinking of
the kick we get out of drinking, the pleasure, the escape
from boredom, the feeling of self-importance and the
companionship of other drinkers. What we don't think of
is the letdown, the hangover, the remorse, the waste of
money, and the facing of another day. In other words,
when we think about that first drink, we're thinking of
all the assets of drinking and none of the liabilities.
What has drinking really got that we haven't got
in A.A.? Do I believe that the liabilities of drinking outweigh
the assets?

Meditation For The Day

I will start a new life each day. I will put the old
mistakes away and start anew each day. God always offers
me a fresh start. I will not be burdened or anxious. If
God's forgiveness were only for the righteous and those
who had not sinned, where would be its need? I believe
that God forgives us all our sins, if we are honestly
trying to live today the way He wants us to live. God
forgives us much and we should be very grateful.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that my life may not be spoiled by worry and fear
and selfishness. I pray that I may have a glad, thankful
and humble heart.

Show Business

"The first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success. On that basis we are almost always in collision with something or somebody, even though our motives are good. Most people try to live by self-propulsion. Each person is like an actor who wants to run the whole show; is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet, the scenery and the rest of the players in his own way. If his arrangements would only stay put, if only people would do as he wished, the show would be great. Everybody, including himself, would be pleased. Life would be wonderful."
c. 2001 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 60-61

Daily Reflection

GOAL: SANITY

". . . Step Two gently and very gradually began to infiltrate

my life. I can't say upon what occasion or upon what day I

came to believe in a Power greater than myself, but I

certainly have that belief now."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 27

"Came to believe!" I gave lip service to my belief when I

felt like it or when I thought it would look good. I didn't

really trust God. I didn't believe He cared for me. I kept

trying to change things I couldn't change. Gradually, in

disgust, I began to turn it all over, saying: "You're so

omnipotent, you take care of it." He did. I began to receive

answers to my deepest problems, sometimes at the most

unusual times: driving to work, eating lunch, or when I was

sound asleep. I realized that I hadn't thought of those

solutions—a Power greater than myself had given them to

me. I came to believe.

As Bill Sees It

Seeking Fool's Gold, p. 12

Pride is the basic breeder of most human difficulties, the chief block totrue progress. Pride lures us into making demands upon ourselves or upon others which cannot be met without perverting or misusing ourGod-given instincts. When the satisfaction of our instincts for sex, security, and a place in society becomes the primary object of our lives, then pride steps in to justify our excesses.

<< << << >> >> >>

I may attain "humility for today" only to the extent that I am able to avoid the bog of guilt and rebellion on one hand and, on the other hand, that fair but deceiving land which is strewn with the fool's-gold coins of pride. This is how I can find and stay on the highway to humility, which lies between these extremes. Therefore, a constant inventory which can reveal when I am off the road is always in order.
