Your Daily Reprieve for Thursday December  1,  2022

From Waynesville, NC

For the ones who feel like

they’re surrounded by too much information.

For the ones who feel checked out

but don’t know how to check back in.

For the ones who feel exhausted

by all the streams of communication.

You are not alone.

May God bless you with nearness.

~Hannah Brenchner

If you have not often felt the joy of doing a kind act,

you have neglected much, and most of all yourself.
~A. Neilen

Right from the moment of our birth,

we are under the care and kindness of our parents.

And then later on in our life,

when we are oppressed by sickness and become old,

we are again dependent on the kindness of others.

And since at the beginning and end of our lives,

we are so dependent on others’ kindness,

how can it be in the middle that

we neglect kindness towards others?

~The Dalai Lama

It was at my home group

that I learned to trust the experiences

of the early groups with meetings.

We have a Traditions meeting once a month

and when I was new and heard the Traditions read out loud,

the experiences of the early AA meetings

gave me the first notion that real people

-- drunks like me -- started this program.”

~Grapevine: New York, New York, February 1990

Big Book Quote

"Simple, but not easy; a price had to be paid. It meant destruction

of self-centeredness. I must turn in all things to the Father of

Light who presides over us all."

Tradition Seven - "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

Alcoholics are certainly all-or-nothing people. Our reactions to money prove this. As A.A. emerged from its infancy into adolescence, we swung from the idea that we needed vast sums of money to the notion that A.A. shouldn't have any. On every lip were the words "You can't mix A.A. and money. We shall have to separate the spiritual from the material." We took this violent new tack because here and there members had tried to make money out of their A.A. connections, and we feared we'd be exploited. Now and then, grateful benefactors had endowed clubhouses, and as a result there was sometimes outside interference in our affairs. We had been presented with a hospital, and almost immediately the donor's son became its principal patient and would-be manager. One A.A. group was given five thousand dollars to do with what it would. The hassle over that chunk of money played havoc for years. Frightened by these complications, some groups refused to have a cent in their treasuries.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

The thoughts that come before having a slip are often
largely subconscious. It is a question whether or not
our subconscious minds ever become entirely free from
alcoholic thoughts as long as we live. For instance,
some of us dream about being drunk when we are asleep,
even after several years of sobriety in A.A. During the
period of our drinking days, our subconscious minds have
been thoroughly conditioned by our alcoholic way of
thinking and it is doubtful that they ever become
entirely free of such thoughts during our lifetime. But
when our conscious minds are fully conditioned against
drinking, we can stay sober and our subconscious minds
do not often bother us. Am I still conditioning my conscious
mind?

Meditation For The Day

Having sympathy and compassion for all who are in
temptation, a condition which we are sometimes in, we
have a responsibility towards them. Sympathy always
includes responsibility. Pity is useless because it does
not have a remedy for the need. But wherever our sympathy
goes, our responsibility goes too. When we are moved with
compassion, we should go to the one in need and bind up
his wounds as best we can.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may have sympathy for those in temptation.
I pray that I may have compassion for others' trials.

Loneliness

"Almost without exception, alcoholics are tortured by loneliness. Even before our drinking got bad and people began to cut us off, nearly all of us suffered the feeling we didn't quite belong. Either we were shy, and dared not draw near others, or we were apt to be noisy good fellows craving attention and companionship, but never getting it - at least to our way of thinking. There was always that mysterious barrier we could neither surmount nor understand . . . That's one reason we loved alcohol too well. It did let us act extemporaneously. But even Bacchus boomeranged on us; we were finally struck down and left in terrified loneliness."
c.1952 AAWS Inc.

Daily Reflection

"SUGGESTED" STEPS

Our Twelfth Step also says that as a result of practicing all

the Steps, we have each found something called a spiritual

awakening. . . . A. A.'s manner of making ready to receive

this gift lies in the practice of the Twelve Steps in our

program."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, pp. 106-07

I remember my sponsor's answer when I told him that the

Steps were "suggested." He replied that they are

"suggested" in the same way that, if you were to jump out

of an airplane with a parachute, it is "suggested" that you

pull the ripcord to save your life. He pointed out that it was

"suggested" I practice the Twelve Steps, if I wanted to save

my life. So I try to remember daily that I have a whole

program of recovery based on all Twelve of the

"suggested" Steps.

Pot Luck

Emotional sobriety is when:

1. I am free of resentments, jealousy, and envy--and free to forgive quickly.

2. My emotions are not so violent that they cause me to go or be on a dry drunk.

3. I am able to make normal everyday decisions without my vision being unduly influenced by my emotions.

4. I am able to identify & live by my personal values without compromise to emotional pressure.

5. I am able to enjoy life as spiritual principles would dictate--such as being properly revolted by ugliness, sin and suffering, and positively rewarded by happenings of love, beauty and principle.

6. I am happy when others do things better or quicker than I have done them.

7. My emotions are in sync with my intellect and both are in synch with God's Will.

8. I can live freely without being emotionally subservient to another human being.

9. I can move freely between the emotional states of child, adult and parent.

10. I derive genuine, healthy pleasure from helping others without thought of reward, money, prestige or station.
