"If you think you are too small to make a difference,

try sleeping with a mosquito.”

~Dalai Lama

Year by year the complexities of this spinning world

grow more bewildering and so each year

we need all the more to seek peace and comfort

in the joyful simplicities.
~Woman's Home Companion (1935)

“When things go well, we must never fall into the error

of believing that no great ill can befall us.

Nor should we accuse ourselves of ‘negative thinking’

when we insist on facing the destructive forces in and around us,

both realistically and effectively.

Vigilance will always be the price of survival.”

~AA Co-Founder, Bill W., November 1960

A lesser known prayer by Saint Francis of Assisi:
The mind does nothing but talk,

ask questions and search for meaning.
The heart does not talk, it does not ask questions,

it does not search for meanings,
it silently moves towards God and surrenders itself to Him.
The mind is Satan's lawyer,
The Heart is Gods Servant.

Big Book Quote

"On the other hand -- and strange as this may seem to those who do not understand -- once a psychic change has occurred, the very same person who seemed doomed, who had so many problems he despaired of ever solving them, suddenly finds himself easily able to control his desire for alcohol, the only effort necessary being that required to follow a few simple rules."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, The Doctors Opinion, pg. xxix~

Step Six - "Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character."

Self-righteous anger also can be very enjoyable. In a perverse way we can actually take satisfaction from the fact that many people annoy us, for it brings a comfortable feeling of superiority. Gossip barbed with our anger, a polite form of murder by character assassination, has its satisfactions for us, too. Here we are not trying to help those we criticize; we are trying to proclaim our own righteousness.

Twenty-Four Hours

 A.A. Thought For The Day

The A.A. program is one of charity because the real meaning of
the word charity is to care enough about other people to really
want to help them. To get the full benefit of the program, we
must try to help other alcoholics. We may try to help somebody
and think we have failed, but the seed we have planted may bear
fruit some time. We never know the results even a word of ours
might have. But the main thing is to have charity for others,
a real desire to help them, whether we succeed or not. Do I
have real charity?

Meditation For The Day

All material things, the universe, the world, even our bodies,
may be Eternal Thought expressed in time and space. The more
the physicists and astronomers reduce matter, the more it becomes
a mathematical formula, which is thought. In the final analysis,
matter is thought. When Eternal Thought expresses itself within
the framework of space and time, it becomes matter. Our thoughts,
within the box of space and time, cannot know anything firsthand,
except material things. But we can deduce that outside the box of
space and time is Eternal Thought, which we can call God.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may be a true expression of Eternal Thought.
I pray that God's thoughts may work through my thoughts.

Working With Others

"Life will take on a new meaning. To watch people recover, to see them help others, to watch loneliness vanish, to see a fellowship grow up about you, to have a host of friends - this is an experience you must not miss. We know you will not want to miss it. Frequent contact with newcomers and with each other is the bright spot of our lives."
Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 89

Daily Reflection

HEALING HEART AND MIND

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being

the exact nature of our wrongs.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 55

Since it is true that God comes to me through people, I can

see that by keeping people at a distance I also keep God at

a distance. God is nearer to me than I think and I can

experience Him by loving people and allowing people to

love me. But I can neither love nor be loved if I allow my

secrets to get in the way.

It's the side of myself that I refuse to look at that rules

me. I must be willing to look at the dark side in order to

heal my mind and heart because that is the road to freedom.

I must walk into darkness to find the light and walk into

fear to find peace.

By revealing my secrets—and thereby ridding myself of

guilt—I can actually change my thinking; by altering my

thinking, I can change myself. My thoughts create my

future. What I will be tomorrow is determined by what I

think today.

Pot Luck

We can talk about humility as much as we like, and pray for it: but we shall not have it until our pride licks the dust. And the most common, the most natural, the most thorough way in which pride is made to lick the dust is by sharing.

Sharing is of two sorts and has two aims.

The first is the sharing which is confession. It is no more nor less than an expression of the truth about ourselves. Ideally it ought to be enough to say these things directly to God, especially when they do not directly concern someone else, which is seldom. Sharing is not a theoretical, but a practical necessity. The fact is that you and I have confessed our sins to God for years without getting victory over them; and when we once are honest with another human being about them, and give them to God and accept God's forgiveness in the presence of the witness, we begin to have victory. It is all very well to assert that...we do not need the mediation of any man between us and God. God has no interest in our...reserve: God is interested in how much of Himself and how little of ourselves there is at the heart of our own nature. We are making screens of our religious and cultural tradition, so that we may not have to look deeper within and give over our pride. For the root of any one sin is buried in pride which lies still deeper. We never get at our real problems till we see that and face our pride.

An excerpt from Chapter XII titled: Our Counterpart of The Cross, from the book: The Gospel According to You - Sam Shoemaker, 1934
