The lies most devastating to our self-esteem

are not so much the lies we tell as the lies we live.        –

~Nathaniel Branden

Life is either always a tightrope or a feather bed.

 Give me the tightrope.

-Edith Wharton

Accept that all of us can be hurt,

that all of us can—and surely will at times—fail.

Other vulnerabilities, like being embarrassed or risking love,

can be terrifying, too.

I think we should follow a simple rule:

if we can take the worst, take the risk.

-Joyce Brothers

“I began to find ... a more centered, purposeful life,

at least in the sense that my body,

mind, emotions, and soul were all more or less heading

in the same direction. I was riding one horse instead of four.”

~Grapevine: La Canada, California, November 1989

Big Book Quote

"We found that God does not make too hard terms with those who seek Him. To us, the Realm of Spirit is broad, roomy, all inclusive; never exclusive or forbidding to those who earnestly seek. It is open, we believe, to all men."

Step Two - "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity."

Another crowd of A.A.'s says: "We were plumb disgusted with religion and all its works. The Bible, we said, was full of nonsense; we could cite it chapter and verse, and we couldn't see the Beatitudes for the `begats.' In spots its morality was impossibly good; in others it seemed impossibly bad. But it was the morality of the religionists themselves that really got us down. We gloated over the hypocrisy, bigotry, and crushing self-righteousness that clung to so many `believers' even in their Sunday best. How we loved to shout the damaging fact that millions of the `good men of religion' were still killing one another off in the name of God. This all meant, of course, that we had substituted negative for positive thinking. After we came to A.A., we had to recognize that this trait had been an ego feeding proposition. In belaboring the sins of some religious people, we could feel superior to all of them. Moreover, we could avoid looking at some of our own shortcomings. Self-righteousness, the very thing that we had contemptuously condemned in others, was our own besetting evil. This phony form of respectability was our undoing, so far as faith was concerned. But finally, driven to A.A., we learned better.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

When we think about having a drink, we're thinking of
the kick we get out of drinking, the pleasure, the escape
from boredom, the feeling of self-importance and the
companionship of other drinkers. What we don't think of
is the letdown, the hangover, the remorse, the waste of
money, and the facing of another day. In other words,
when we think about that first drink, we're thinking of
all the assets of drinking and none of the liabilities.
What has drinking really got that we haven't got
in A.A.? Do I believe that the liabilities of drinking outweigh
the assets?

Meditation For The Day

I will start a new life each day. I will put the old
mistakes away and start anew each day. God always offers
me a fresh start. I will not be burdened or anxious. If
God's forgiveness were only for the righteous and those
who had not sinned, where would be its need? I believe
that God forgives us all our sins, if we are honestly
trying to live today the way He wants us to live. God
forgives us much and we should be very grateful.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that my life may not be spoiled by worry and fear
and selfishness. I pray that I may have a glad, thankful
and humble heart.

Change

How many of us would presume to declare, "Well, I'm sober, and I'm happy. What more can I want, or do? I'm fine the way I am." We know that the price of such self-satisfaction is an inevitable backslide, punctuated at some point by a very rude awakening. We have to grow or else deteriorate. For us, the status quo can only be for today, never for tomorrow. Change we must; we cannot stand still.

Bill W., April 1961
c. 1967 AAWS, As Bill Sees It, p. 25

Daily Reflection

GOAL: SANITY

". . . Step Two gently and very gradually began to infiltrate

my life. I can't say upon what occasion or upon what day I

came to believe in a Power greater than myself, but I

certainly have that belief now."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 27

"Came to believe!" I gave lip service to my belief when I

felt like it or when I thought it would look good. I didn't

really trust God. I didn't believe He cared for me. I kept

trying to change things I couldn't change. Gradually, in

disgust, I began to turn it all over, saying: "You're so

omnipotent, you take care of it." He did. I began to receive

answers to my deepest problems, sometimes at the most

unusual times: driving to work, eating lunch, or when I was

sound asleep. I realized that I hadn't thought of those

solutions—a Power greater than myself had given them to

me. I came to believe.

Reflection for the Day

I am free to be, to do, to accept, to reject. I am free to be the wise, loving, kind and patient person I want to be. I'm free to do that which I consider wise - that which will in no way harm or hinder another person. I'm free to do that which will lead me into paths of peace and satisfaction. I'm free to decide for or against, to say no and to say yes. I'm free to live life in a productive way and to contribute what I have to give to life.

Am I coming to believe that I'm free to be the best self I'm able to be?

Today I Pray

Let the freedom I am now experiencing continue to flow through my life into productiveness, into the conviction of life's goodness I have always wanted to share. May I accept this freedom with God's blessing - and use it wisely.

Today I Will Remember

Let freedom ring true.
