Your Daily Reprieve for  Wednesday  December 1,  2021

From Waynesvile, NC

“As long as I am willing to do what I am called to do in any given moment

and to abandon the effort to control the results of my actions,

then I am following the path that my Higher Power

– call it God, Good Orderly Direction, the soul, the life force,

or anything else – has set out for me.”

~Grapevine: Thompson, Pennsylvania, March 1997

Pride makes us artificial

and humility makes us real.

~Thomas Merton

Ironically,

often the thing that keeps me from experiencing joy

is my preoccupation with self.

The very selfishness that keeps me

from pouring myself out for the joy of others

also keeps me from noticing and delighting

in the myriad small gifts God offers each day.

This is why Walker Percy describes boredom as

"the self stuffed with the self."

-John Ortberg

How necessary it is to cultivate a spirit of joy.

It is a psychological truth that

the physical acts of reverence and devotion make one feel devout.

The courteous gesture increases one’s respect for others.

To act lovingly is to begin to feel loving,

and certainly to act joyfully brings joy to others

which in turn makes one feel joyful.

I believe we are called to the duty of delight.

 -Dorothy Day

Big Book Quote

“Sometimes we hear an alcoholic say that the only thing he needs to do is to keep sober. Certainly he must keep sober, for there will be no home if he doesnt. But he is yet a long way from making good to the wife or parents whom for years he has so shockingly treated.”

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, Into Action, pg. 82~

Tradition Ten - "Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy."

As by some deep instinct, we A.A.'s have known from the very beginning that we must never, no matter what the provocation, publicly take sides in any fight, even a worthy one. All history affords us the spectacle of striving nations and groups finally torn asunder because they were designed for, or tempted into, controversy. Others fell apart because of sheer self-righteousness while trying to enforce upon the rest of mankind some millennium of their own specification. In our own times, we have seen millions die in political and economic wars often spurred by religious and racial difference. We live in the imminent possibility of a fresh holocaust to determine how men shall be governed, and how the products of nature and toil shall be divided among them. That is the spiritual climate in which A.A. was born, and by God's grace has nevertheless flourished.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

The thoughts that come before having a slip are often
largely subconscious. It is a question whether or not
our subconscious minds ever become entirely free from
alcoholic thoughts as long as we live. For instance,
some of us dream about being drunk when we are asleep,
even after several years of sobriety in A.A. During the
period of our drinking days, our subconscious minds have
been thoroughly conditioned by our alcoholic way of
thinking and it is doubtful that they ever become
entirely free of such thoughts during our lifetime. But
when our conscious minds are fully conditioned against
drinking, we can stay sober and our subconscious minds
do not often bother us. Am I still conditioning my conscious
mind?

Meditation For The Day

Having sympathy and compassion for all who are in
temptation, a condition which we are sometimes in, we
have a responsibility towards them. Sympathy always
includes responsibility. Pity is useless because it does
not have a remedy for the need. But wherever our sympathy
goes, our responsibility goes too. When we are moved with
compassion, we should go to the one in need and bind up
his wounds as best we can.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may have sympathy for those in temptation.
I pray that I may have compassion for others' trials.

Authority

"Many people wonder how A.A. can function under such a seeming anarchy. Other societies have to have law and force and sanction and punishment, administered by authorized people. Happily for us, we found we need no human authority whatever. We have two authorities which are far more effective. One is benign, the other malign. There is God, our Father, who very simply says, 'I am waiting for you to do my will.' The other authority is named John Barleycorn, and he says, 'You had better do God's will or I will kill you.' And sometimes he does kill. So, when all the chips are down, we conform to God's will or perish. At this level, the death sentence hangs over the A.A. member, his group, and A.A. as a whole."
Bill W., St. Louis, July 1955

Daily Reflection

"SUGGESTED" STEPS

Our Twelfth Step also says that as a result of practicing all

the Steps, we have each found something called a spiritual

awakening. . . . A. A.'s manner of making ready to receive

this gift lies in the practice of the Twelve Steps in our

program."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, pp. 106-07

I remember my sponsor's answer when I told him that the

Steps were "suggested." He replied that they are

"suggested" in the same way that, if you were to jump out

of an airplane with a parachute, it is "suggested" that you

pull the ripcord to save your life. He pointed out that it was

"suggested" I practice the Twelve Steps, if I wanted to save

my life. So I try to remember daily that I have a whole

program of recovery based on all Twelve of the

"suggested" Steps.

“I Love you”

So often when we say “I love you” we say it with a huge “I” and a small “you”.   ~~ Anthony

As we've worked our programs, many of us have discovered that we must learn to love ourselves in order to love others, However, we have also discovered that when we interpret loving ourselves as putting our selfish wants first, we eventually alienate the people we love and end up feeling isolated and unloved.

Love needs a relationship; it withers in isolation. We must allow ourselves to both give and feel love — within ourselves, with God, and other people. And when we withdraw for our egos self-will from the moment, love can freely flow from within and come back to us from other people and God. We receive, in full measure, that which we give.

*************************

I will offer love today, fully and freely, and be open to its return.
