Your Daily Reprieve 04.23.21

Your Daily Reprieve for Friday  April  23, 2021

From Waynesvile, NC

Today I have a clearer perspective

on what my role as a sponsor is and isn’t.

It is to stay sober, be available to listen, share my thoughts,

pray for others, and let them live their own lives.

It is not to ‘fix’ anyone, get them sober,

make them happy, demand they conform,

or make their decisions.”

~Grapevine: Berlin, Conn., September 2004

Unfortunately, all is not beauty and peace.

I don't believe I've ever met a person

who hasn't been challenged or wounded by something.

Difficulties present choices:

we can either waste away from our wounds

or use them to grow our souls.

-Joan Borysenko

I also see the world of religion.

I see some of my brothers and sisters trying to be religious

without being fully human.

They seem a little rigid and narrow at times,

wanting to be holy, but not human.

They seem to be winning a place in heaven,

without realizing or enjoying the beauty of earth.

They keep the ten commandments,

but their observances look so joyless.

Such a world seems small

and the air in that world is stale.

-John Powell, S.J.

Character defects are like mushrooms,

They grow in the dark and die when exposed to the Light.

Big Book Quote

"At a certain point in the drinking of every alcoholic, he passes

into a state where the most powerful desire to stop drinking is of

absolutely no avail. This tragic situation has already arrived in

practically every case long before it is suspected."

1622 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Step Eight - "Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all."

Steps Eight and Nine are concerned with personal relations. First, we take a look backward and try to discover where we have been at fault; next we make a vigorous attempt to repair the damage we have done; and third, having thus cleaned away the debris of the past, we consider how, with our newfound knowledge of ourselves, we may develop the best possible relations with every human being we know.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Men and women keep coming into A.A., licked by alcohol, often given
up by doctors as hopeless cases, they themselves admitting they're
helpless to stop drinking. When I see these men and women get sober
and stay sober over a period of months and years, I know that A.A.
works. The change I see in people who come into A.A. not only
convinces me that A.A. works, but it also convinces me that there
must be a Power greater than ourselves which helps us to make that
change. Am I convinced that a Higher Power can help me to change?

Meditation For The Day

Cooperation with God is the great necessity for our lives. All else
follows naturally. Cooperation with God is the result of our
consciousness of His presence. Guidance is bound to come to us as we
live more and more with God, as our consciousness becomes more and
more attuned to the great Consciousness of the universe. We must
have many quiet times when we not so much ask to be shown and led
by God, as to feel and realize His presence. New spiritual growth
comes naturally from cooperation with God.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that God may supply me with strength and show me the
direction in which He wants me to grow. I pray that these things may
come naturally from my cooperation with Him.

The Past

"Showing others who suffer how we were given help is the very thing which makes life seem so worthwhile to us now. Cling to the thought that, in God's hands, the dark past is the greatest possession you have - the key to life and happiness for others. With it you can avert death and misery for them."

Daily Reflection

A.A. IS NOT A CURE-ALL

It would be a product of false pride to claim that A. A. is a

cure-all, even for alcoholism

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 285

In my early years of sobriety I was full of pride, thinking

that A. A. was the only source of treatment for a good and

happy life. It certainly was the basic ingredient for my

sobriety and even today, with over twelve years in the

program, I am very involved in meetings, sponsorship and

service. During the first four years of my recovery, I found

it necessary to seek professional help, since my emotional

health was extremely poor. There are those folks too, who

have found sobriety and happiness in other organizations.

A.A. taught me that I had a choice: to go to any lengths to

enhance my sobriety. A.A. may not be a cure-all for

everything, but it is the center of my sober living.

Today's quotation:

Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind. Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten. ~The Buddha

Today's Meditation:

What positive things have anger and resentment given birth to in your life? What good has it brought to you or to those you love? How many pleasant memories of nice times with loved ones have been the result of anger?

I've known many angry people in my life, and none of them have inspired positive memories. I've been angry myself many times, and never has that anger made me feel better about myself, about life, or about any situation. And I've found that as long as I hold on to the resentment that I feel because of something someone else did (or that I think they did), my anger will continue to grow, to fester, to become a destructive force that will bring nothing positive to my life.

As I'm feeling the resentment, it's easy to convince myself that it's justified, and that it's going to be productive to express my anger. I don't think it really has been, though, especially when I consider the potential options to expressing my anger. Thoughts of resentment are like logs in a fireplace, while the flame is the anger itself--without the logs there, there is no fire.

How can we get rid of thoughts of resentment? Compassion helps--trying to understand just why another person has done something can help me to see the situation in a different light. Giving the person the benefit of the doubt--perhaps they didn't understand the effects of their action, or perhaps no one has ever taught them proper ways to talk or act. It's possible they don't even realize that what they've done has affected others. Or maybe the person acted out of fear, and it would help us and them to help them to deal with their fear rather than getting angry at them.

Are we going to provide our anger with plenty of fuel by harboring thoughts of resentment, or are we going to lessen our own spiritual and emotional load by letting go of those feelings? Which path would be most beneficial to the greatest number of people?
