Happy New Year!!!

2020

Celebrate endings—for they precede new beginnings.
~Jonathan Huie

“As the old year retires and a new one is born, we commit into the hands of our Creator the happenings of the past year and ask for direction and guidance in the new one. May He grant us His grace, His tranquility and His wisdom!” – Peggy Toney Horton

“Any new beginning is forged from the shards of the past, not from the abandonment of the past.” – Craig D. Lounsbrough

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.  Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.  So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.  Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.  Make your mistakes, next year and forever.” – Neil Gaiman

“Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you have always wanted to do but could not find the time. Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Vow not to make a promise you do not think you can keep. Walk tall, and smile more. You will look 10 years younger. Do not be afraid to say, I love you. Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world.” – Ann Landers

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Big Book Quote

"If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were
sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered
long ago. But we found that such codes and philosophies did not save
us, no matter how much we tried. We could wish to be moral, we could
wish to be philosophically comforted, in fact, we could will these
things with all our might, but the needed power wasnt there. Our
human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient, they
failed utterly."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, We Agnostics, pg. 44~

12&12

Step Two - "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity."

To clergymen, doctors, friends, and families, the alcoholic who means well and tries hard is a heartbreaking riddle. To most A.A.'s, he is not. There are too many of us who have been just like him, and have found the riddle's answer. This answer has to do with the quality of faith rather than its quantity. This has been our blind spot. We supposed we had humility when really we hadn't. We supposed we had been serious about religious practices when, upon honest appraisal, we found we had been only superficial. Or, going to the other extreme, we had wallowed in emotionalism and had mistaken it for true religious feeling. In both cases, we had been asking something for nothing. The fact was we really hadn't cleaned house so that the grace of God could enter us and expel the obsession. In no deep or meaningful sense had we ever taken stock of ourselves, made amends to those we had harmed, or freely given to any other human being without any demand for reward. We had not even prayed rightly. We had always said, "Grant me my wishes" instead of "Thy will be done." The love of God and man we understood not at all. Therefore we remained self-deceived, and so incapable of receiving enough grace to restore us to sanity.

Twenty-Four Hours

 A.A. Thought For The Day

When I came into A.A., was I a desperate person? Did I have a
soul-sickness? Was I so sick of myself and my way of living that I
couldn't stand looking at myself in a mirror? Was I ready for A.A.?
Was I ready to try anything that would help me to get sober and to get
over my soul-sickness? Should I ever forget the condition I was in?

Meditation For The Day

In the new year, I will live one day at a time. I will make each day one
of preparation for better things ahead. I will not dwell on the past or
the future, only on the present. I will bury every fear of the future, all
thoughts of unkindness and bitterness, all my dislikes, my resentments,
my sense of failure, my disappointments in others and in myself, my
gloom and my despondency. I will leave all these things buried and go
forward, in this new year, into a new life.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that God will guide me one day at a time in the new year. I pray
that for each day, God will supply the wisdom and the strength that I
need.

Show Business

"The first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success. On that basis we are almost always in collision with something or somebody, even though our motives are good. Most people try to live by self-propulsion. Each person is like an actor who wants to run the whole show; is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet, the scenery and the rest of the players in his own way. If his arrangements would only stay put, if only people would do as he wished, the show would be great. Everybody, including himself, would be pleased. Life would be wonderful."
c. 2001 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 60-61

Daily Reflection

"I AM A MIRACLE"

The central fact of our lives today is the absolute certainty

that our Creator has entered into our hearts and lives in a

way which is indeed miraculous. He has commenced to

accomplish those things for us which we could never do by

ourselves.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 25

This truly is a fact in my life today, and a real miracle. I

always believed in God, but could never put that belief

meaningfully into my life. Today, because of Alcoholics

Anonymous, I now trust and rely on God, as I understand

Him; I am sober today because of that! Learning to trust

and rely on God was something I could never have done

alone. I now believe in miracles because I am one!

Today's quotation:

May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have.

~ Richard L. Evans

Today's Meditation:

It's kind of funny how childish we can be sometimes when it comes to our possessions. There are times when I want something so much that I think about it constantly until I get it, even though the number of things that I do have far outnumber the number of things that I want. I say childish because it's so common to see children completely focused on getting something new for themselves, and we definitely do act that way ourselves.

We should remember, though, that not everything that we want is best for us to have. That's why we don't always get everything that we want. My car is now eight years old, and I was recently thinking about getting a new one. I fought the temptation, though, and now my state of mind is such that I'm quite satisfied to hold on to this car another two or three years. There's absolutely no reason not to do so, and now I'm pretty happy that I don't have something that I "wanted" so badly just a few months ago--and I also don't have the new payments.

Richard's point about spoiling the enjoyment of the things we do have shouldn't be missed, either. If we get so caught up in wanting something that we no longer can enjoy the things that are still positive parts of our lives, then we're making a pretty big--and pretty basic--mistake. We have a lot in life, and it's important that we not take what we have for granted as we desire to have something else. If we do so, we're only hurting ourselves. But we can't miss that point or pretend it's not true--we definitely are hurting ourselves.
