Your Daily Reprieve for Sunday November 1, 2020

From Waynesville, NC

There are only two kinds of people:

those who say to God, "Thy will be done,"

and those to whom God says,

"All right, then, have it your way."
~C.S. Lewis

“Complaining is not an action step.”

~Grapevine: Indianapolis, Indiana, August 1982

There can be no success without enthusiasm.

The secret of a full life is lots of enthusiasm,

the kind that keeps you fighting and winning over all obstacles

--and enjoying every minute of it.

-Alfred Krebs

Enthusiasm is the thing which makes the world go round.

Without its driving power, nothing worth doing has ever been done.

Love, friendship, religion, altruism, devotion to career or hobby—all these,

and most of the other good things of life, are forms of enthusiasm.

-Robert H. Schauffler

Big Book Quote

"We agnostically inclined would not feel satisfied with a proposal
which does not lend itself to reasonable approach and interpretation. Hence we are at pains to tell why we think our present faith is reasonable, why we think it more sane and logical to believe than not to believe, why we say our former thinking was soft and mushy when we threw up our hands in doubt and said, 'We don't know.'"

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, We Agnostics, pg. 53~

Tradition Eleven - "Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films."

WITHOUT its legions of well-wishers, A.A. could never have grown as it has. Throughout the world, immense and favorable publicity of every description has been the principal means of bringing alcoholics into our Fellowship. In A.A. offices, clubs, and homes, telephones ring constantly. One voice says, "I read a piece in the newspapers . . ."; another, "We heard a radio program . . ."; and still another, "We saw a moving picture . . ." or "We something about A.A. on television. . . ." It is no exaggeration to say that half of A.A.'s membership has been led to us through channels like these.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

I have hope. That magic thing that I had lost or misplaced.

T he future looks dark no more. I do not even look at it,

except when necessary to make plans.

I try to let the future take care of itself.

The future will be made up of todays and todays,

stretching out as short as now and as long as eternity.

Hope is justified by many right nows, by the rightness of the present.

Nothing can happen to me that God does not will for me. I can
hope for the best, as long as I have what I have and it is good. Have I hope?

Meditation For The Day

Faith is the messenger that bears your prayers to God.

Prayer can be like incense, rising ever higher and higher.

The prayer of faith is the prayer of trust that feels the presence
of God which it rises to meet.

It can be sure of some response from God.

We can say a prayer of thanks to God every day for His grace,

which has kept us on the right way and allowed us to start living the good life.

So we should pray to God with faith and trust and
gratitude.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may feel sure of some response to my prayers.

I pray that I may be content with whatever form that response takes.

Helpfulness

"Your job now is to be at the place where you may be of maximum helpfulness to others, so never hesitate to go anywhere if you can be helpful. You should not hesitate to visit the most sordid spot on earth on such an errand. Keep on the firing line of life with these motives and God will keep you unharmed."
Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 102

Thought to Consider . . .

W
e in A.A. don't carry the alcoholic; we carry the message.

Daily Reflection

I CANNOT CHANGE THE WIND

is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and

rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for

alcohol is a subtle foe.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 85

My first sponsor told me there were two things to say about

prayer and meditation: first, I had to start and second, I had

to continue. When I came to A.A. my spiritual life was

bankrupt; if I considered God at all, He was to be called

upon only when my self-will was incapable of a task or

when overwhelming fears had eroded my ego.

Today I am grateful for a new life, one in which my

prayers are those of thanksgiving. My prayer time is more

for listening than for talking. I know today that if I cannot

change the wind, I can adjust my sail. I know the difference

between superstition and spirituality. I know there is a

graceful way of being right, and many ways to be wrong.

LIES

"A liar needs a good memory."

-- Quintilian

I lied to impress. I lied to hide my guilt and shame. I lied to cover my

mistakes. I lied to bridge the silence. I lied to fantasize. I lied to hurt

and destroy. I lied to hide the real me. Then I lied to cover the lies.

Then I lied to cover the lies I told to cover the original lies! So it

went on. Endless. Exhausting. Meaningless. A part of me always

loathed the lies I told. Then I grew to hate myself.

Today, because I understand spirituality to be based on truth, I try

not to tell lies. When I do lie, I make an effort to correct myself

and apologize. Today lying is painful for me. Today I try to use my

mind, imagination and memory for better things.

O God, who gave mankind the miracle of language and

communication, let me not abuse Your gift with destructive deceit.
