Your Daily Reprieve for Tuesday September 1, 2020

From Waynesville, NC

Somewhere in the late 20th century we got the idea that busyness is a virtue.

We decided that the more activities we can squeeze into our lives,

the happier we'll be.

What ultimately results, though, is physical and spiritual exhaustion.

We jump from one appointment to another, our body and mind racing.
We schedule events back to back and overlapping,

with no time to rest or reflect.

And when we're in one activity,

we're either distracted with the thing we've just done

or the thing that's coming up.

It's not a good way to live.

-Jack Zavada

We can easily manage if we will only take, each day,

the burden appointed to it.

But the load will too heavy for us

if we carry yesterday's burden over again today,

and then add burden of the morrow

before we are required to bear it.

~~John Newton, author of, "AMAZING GRACE"

Now is the accepted time,

not tomorrow,

not some more convenient season.

It is today that our best work can be done.

W.E.B. Du Bois

May I never get too busy in my own affairs

that I fail to respond to the needs of others

with kindness and compassion.

-Thomas Jefferson

Big Book Quote

"Next we launched out on a course of vigorous action, the first step
of which is a personal housecleaning, which many of us had never
attempted. Though our decision was a vital and crucial step, it
could have little permanent effect unless at once followed by a
strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of, the things in ourselves
which had been blocking us. Our liquor was but a symptom. So we had
to get down to causes and conditions.

Therefore, we started upon a personal inventory. This was Step Four."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, How It Works, pg. 63~

Tradition Five - "Each group has but one primary purpose - to carry it's message to the alcoholic who still suffers."

Just as firmly bound by obligation are the members of Alcoholics Anonymous, who have demonstrated that they can help problem drinkers as others seldom can. The unique ability of each A.A. to identify himself with, and bring recovery to, the newcomer in no way depends upon his learning, eloquence, or on any special individual skills. the only thing that matters is that he is an alcoholic who has found a key to sobriety. These legacies of suffering and of recovery are easily passed among alcoholics, one to the other. This is our gift from god, and its bestowal upon others like us is the one aim that today animates A.A.'s all around the globe.

pp. 150-151

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Be careful not to brand new prospects as alcoholics. Let them draw
their own conclusion. But talk to them about the hopelessness of
alcoholism. Tell them exactly what happened to you and how you
recovered. Stress the spiritual feature freely. If they are agnostics
or atheists, make it emphatic that they do not have to agree with
your concept of God. They can choose any concept they like,
provided it makes sense to them. The main thing is that they be
willing to believe in a power greater than themselves and that they
live by spiritual principles." Do I hold back too much in speaking
of the spiritual principles of the program?

Meditation For The Day

"I will never leave or forsake thee." Down through the centuries,
thousands have believed in God's constancy, untiringness, and
unfailing love. God has love. Then forever you are sure of His
love. God has power. Then forever you are sure, in every
difficulty and temptation, of His strength. God has patience. Then
always there is One who can never tire. God has understanding.
Then always you will understand and be understood. Unless you want
Him to go, God will never leave you. He is always ready with
power.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may feel that God's love will never fail. I pray that I
may have confidence in His unfailing power.

Reprieve

"It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all of our activities."
1976 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85

Thought to Consider . . .

T
his is a program of limitless expansion. The gate is wide but the road is narrow.

Daily Reflection

WILLINGNESS TO GROW

If more gifts are to be received, our awakening has to go

on.

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 8

Sobriety fills the painful "hole in the soul" that my

alcoholism created. Often I feel so physically well that I

believe my work is done. However, joy is not just the

absence of pain; it is the gift of continued spiritual

awakening. Joy comes from ongoing and active study, as

well as application of the principles of recovery in my

everyday life, and from sharing that experience with others.

My Higher Power presents many opportunities for deeper

spiritual awakening. I need only to bring into my recovery

the willingness to grow. Today I am ready to grow.

Today's Quotation:

Rest assured that, generally speaking, others are acting
in exactly the same manner that you would under exactly
the same circumstances.  Hence, be kind, understanding,
empathetic, compassionate, and loving.

Gary W. Fenchuk

Today's Meditation:

It's very easy to be judgmental of other people when we're not going through the same things they are.  If we were to step back, though, and ask ourselves what may be making people act the way they do, we might find causes that we never might have considered and we might understand their actions much more clearly.

Longfellow spoke of the concept of walking a mile in another person's moccasins, and he definitely wasn't the first person to speak of such a thing.  Someone else said that if we were to throw everyone's problems into a huge pile, once we saw some of the things that other people are going through we would be more than glad to take our own problems back.

Kind.  Understanding.  Empathetic.  Compassionate.  Loving.

These are qualities that we would love to see in other people, but how are they ever going to know that it's okay to live this way if we don't model it for them?  How can we model these qualities if we don't feel them, if we don't do our best to see the best in other people, if we don't try to understand what others are going through as they make their ways through life?

We all know what it's like to be judged, so let's not do the judging ourselves.  Let us be kind to one another, and let us try to understand what others need in their lives before we act swiftly to condemn them or the things that they do.  If the world is to become a kinder, gentler place, then the transformation must begin somewhere.  Let it begin with us.
