Your Daily Reprieve 06.22.20

Your Daily Reprieve for Monday June 22, 2020

From Waynesville, NC

“The chief task in life is simply this:
to identify and separate matters
so that I can say clearly to myself
which are externals not under my control,
and which have to do with the choices I actually control.
Where then do I look for good and evil?
Not to uncontrollable externals,
but within myself to the choices that are my own”
~Epictetus

“I don’t stand around on street corners just loving everybody today.
But in an AA meeting or any AA gathering,
I know I am in the kind of community of love
that every therapy, religion, and philosophy desperately seeks.
Love is our glue.”
~Grapevine: Fairfield, Connecticut, March 1980

"Strength doesn't come from what you can do.
It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't."
~Rikki Rogers

"Keep your head and your heart
going in the right direction
and you will not have to
worry about your feet."
--Unknown

Big Book Quote

"Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code."

1418 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Step Twelve - "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

When we developed still more, we discovered the best possible source of emotional stability to be God Himself. We found that dependence upon His perfect justice, forgiveness, and love was healthy, and that it would work where nothing else would. If we really depended upon God, we couldn't very well play God to our fellows nor would we feel the urge wholly to rely on human protection and care. These were the new attitudes that finally brought many of us an inner strength and peace that could not be deeply shaken by the shortcomings of others or by any calamity not of our own making.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

If you have any doubt, just ask any of the older members of
the A.A. group, and they will readily tell you that since they
turned their lives over to the care of God as they understand
Him, many of their problems have been banished into the
forgotten yesterdays. When you allow yourself to be upset over
one thing, you succeed only in opening the door to the coming
of hundreds of other upsetting things. Am I allowing myself to
be upset over little things?

Meditation For The Day

I would do well not to think of the Red Sea of difficulties
that lies ahead. I am sure that when I come to that Red Sea,
the waters will part and I will be given all the power I need
to face and overcome many difficulties and meet what is in
store for me with courage. I believe that I will pass through
that Red Sea to the promised land, the land of the spirit where
many souls meet in perfect comradeship. I believe that when
that time comes, I will be freed of all the dross of material
things and find peace.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may face the future with courage. I pray that I
may be given strength to face both life and death fearlessly.

Instincts

"The idea keeps persisting that the instincts are primarily bad and are the roadblocks before which all spirituality falters. I believe that the difference between good and evil is not the difference between spiritual and instinctual man; it is the difference between proper and improper use of the instinctual. Recognition and right channeling of the instinctual are the essence of achieving wholeness."
Bill W., Letter, 1954
1967 AAWS, As Bill Sees It, p. 287

Daily Reflection

TODAY, I'M FREE
This brought me to the good healthy realization that there
were plenty of situations left in the world over which I had
no personal power—that if I was so ready to admit that to
be the case with alcohol, so I must make the same admission
with respect to much else. I would have to be still and know
that He, not I, was God.
AS BILL SEES IT, p. 114

I am learning to practice acceptance in all circumstances of
my life, so that I may enjoy peace of mind. At one time life
was a constant battle because I felt I had to go through each
day fighting myself, and everyone else. Eventually, this
became a losing battle. I ended up getting drunk and crying
over my misery. When I began to let go and let God take
over my life I began to have peace of mind. Today, I am
free. I do not have to fight anybody or anything anymore.

Pot Luck

A Stoic believes they don’t control the world around them, only how they respond—and that they must always respond with courage, temperance, wisdom, and justice.

Life is unpredictable. There’s so much we have no control over. That can be overwhelming and crippling or it can be freeing. Virtue is how we ensure the later. No matter what happens, we always have the capacity to use reason and make choices. We should always try to do the right thing. To let virtue guide us. It’s all that we control. Let the rest take care of itself, as it will with or without your consent.

We’ll leave you with this entry from Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations,

“If, at some point in your life, you should come across anything better than justice, prudence, self-control, courage—than a mind satisfied that it has succeeded in enabling you to act rationally, and satisfied to accept what’s beyond its control—if you find anything better than that, embrace it without reservations—it must be an extraordinary thing indeed—and enjoy it to the full.

But if nothing presents itself that’s superior to the spirit that lives within—the one that has subordinated individual desires to itself, that discriminates among impressions, that has broken free of physical temptations, and subordinated itself to the gods, and looks out for human beings’ welfare—if you find that there’s nothing more important or valuable than that, then don’t make room for anything but it.”
