Your Daily Reprieve 04.14.20

Your Daily Reprieve for Tuesday April 14, 2020

From Waynesville, NC

“I thank God for bringing me to Alcoholics Anonymous,
but mostly I thank Alcoholics Anonymous for bringing me to God.”
~Grapevine: Toronto, Ontario, March 2006

When there's a big disappointment,
we don't know if that's the end of the story.
It may just be the beginning of a great adventure.
Pema Chodron

You will be too much for some people…
those aren’t your people…
The wrong relationships prepare you for the right ones.
And when the right ones come along,
you'll be thankful the others didn't work out.
~Patti L.

"I'll tell you this my dear friends...
the fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible,
but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.
As we advance in life it becomes more and more difficult,
but in fighting the difficulties the inmost strength of the heart is developed.
In spite of everything I shall rise again:
I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement,
and I will go on with my drawing."
~Vincent van Gogh

Big Book Quote

"If you are as seriously alcoholic as we were, we believe there is no
middle-of-the-road solution. We were in a position where life was
becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which
there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives:
One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of
our intolerable situation as best we could; and the other, to accept
spiritual help. This we did because we honestly wanted to, and were
willing to make the effort."

1554 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Step Ten - "Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it."

A continuous look at our assets and liabilities, and a real desire to learn and grow by this means, are necessities for us. We alcoholics have learned this the hard way. More experienced people, of course, in all times and places have practiced unsparing self-survey and criticism. For the wise have always known that no one can make much of his life until self-searching becomes a regular habit, until he is able to admit and accept what he finds, and until he patiently and persistently tries to correct what is wrong.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

A police captain once told about certain cases he had come
across in his police work. The cause of the tragedy in each
case was drunkenness. He told his audience about a man who
got into an argument with his wife while he was drunk and beat
her to death. Then he went out and drank some more. The police
captain also told about a woman who got too near the edge of
an old quarry hole when she was drunk and fell one hundred
and fifty feet to her death. When I read or hear these stories,
do I think about our motto: "But for the grace of God"?

Meditation For The Day

I must keep balance by keeping spiritual things at the center
of my life. God will give me this poise and balance if I pray
for it. This poise will give me power in dealing with the lives
of others. This balance will manifest itself more and more in
my own life. I should keep material things in their proper place
and keep spiritual things at the center of my life. Then I will
be at peace amid the distractions of everyday living.

Prayer For The Day
I pray that I may dwell with God at the center of my life.
I pray that I may keep that inner peace at the center of
my being.

Unity

"The unity of Alcoholics Anonymous is the most cherished quality our Society has. Our lives, the lives of all to come, depend squarely upon it. We stay whole, or A.A. dies. Without unity, the heart of A.A. would cease to beat; our world arteries would no longer carry the life-giving grace of God; His gift to us would be spent aimlessly. Back again in their caves, alcoholics would reproach us and say, 'What a great thing A.A. might have been!'"
Bill W., Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 130

Thought to Consider . . .

I
am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible.

Daily Reflection

THE "NUMBER ONE OFFENDER"
Resentment is the "number one" offender. It destroys more
alcoholics than anything else. From it stem all forms of
spiritual disease, for we have been not only mentally and
physically ill, we have been spiritually sick.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 64

As I look at myself practicing the Fourth Step, it is easy to
gloss over the wrong that I have done, because I can easily
see it as a question of "getting even" for a wrong done to
me. If I continue to relive my old hurt, it is a resentment
and resentment bars the sunlight from my soul. If I
continue o relive hurts and hates, I will hurt and hate
myself. After years in the dark of resentments, I have bund
the sunlight. I must let go of resentments; I cannot afford
them.

What Is Gratitude?

Every language in the world has a way of saying "thank you." This is because gratitude is an inherent quality that resides within each human being, and is triggered and expressed spontaneously in a variety of different contexts. Gratitude crosses all boundaries - creed, age, vocation, gender, and nation - and is emphasized by all the great religious traditions.

Gratitude is essentially the recognition of the unearned increments of value in one's experience the acknowledgment of the positive things that come our way that we did not actively work toward or ask for. The International Encyclopedia of Ethics defines gratitude as "the heart's internal indicator on which the tally of gifts outweighs exchanges," a definition that echoes the notion of unearned increments. The connection to the concept of gifts is a natural one. The Latin root of the word gratitude is grata or gratia - a given gift - and from this same root we get our word grace, which means a gift freely given that is unearned.

Gratitude is a feeling that spontaneously emerges from within. However, it is not simply an emotional response; it is also a choice we make. We can choose to be grateful, or we can choose to be ungrateful - to take our gifts and blessings for granted. As a choice, gratitude is an attitude or disposition.

As writer Alexis de Tocqueville once described it, gratitude is "a habit of the heart."

Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk, reminds us that "gratefulness is the inner gesture of giving meaning to our life by receiving life as a gift."

M. J. Ryan's classic book Attitudes of Gratitude supports the idea that gratitude is a stance we voluntarily take, and one we can adopt through the difficult seasons of life as well as the good ones.

The daily practice of gratitude keeps the heart open regardless of what comes our way.
