Tradition Six - "An A.A. group ought never endorse,
finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise,
lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary
purpose."
The minute we saw this compromising fact for what it was, we asked the prospective publicity director how he felt about it. "Great guns!" he said. "Of course I can't take the job. The ink wouldn't be dry on the first ad before an awful shriek would go up from the dry camp. They'd be out with lanterns looking for an honest A.A. to plump for their brand of education. A.A. would land exactly in the middle of the wet-dry controversy. Half the people in this country would think we'd signed up with the drys, the other half would think we'd joined the wets. What a mess!" "Nevertheless," we pointed out, "you still have a legal right to take this job." "I know that," he said. "But this is no time for legalities. Alcoholics Anonymous saved my life, and it comes first. I certainly won't be the guy to land A.A. in big-time trouble, and this would really do it!" Concerning endorsements, our friend had said it all. We saw as never before that we could not lend the A.A. name to any cause other than our own. pp. 158-159 |
Twenty-Four
Hours
A.A.
Thought For The Day
I am part of A.A., one among many, but I am one.
I
need the A.A. principles for the development of the buried life within me.
A.A.
may be human in its organization, but it is Divine in its purpose.
The
purpose is to point me toward God and a better life.
Participating
in the privilege of the movement, I shall share in the responsibilities, taking
it upon myself to carry my fair share of the load, not grudgingly but
joyfully.
To
the extent that I fail in my responsibilities, A.A. fails.
To
the extent I succeed, A.A. succeeds.
Do
I accept this as my A.A. credo?
Meditation For The Day "Praise the Lord." What does praising God mean?
It
means being grateful for all the wonderful things in the universe
and
for all the blessings in your life.
So
praise God by being grateful and humble.
Praise
of this kind has more power to vanquish evil than has mere resignation. The truly grateful and humble person who is
always praising God, is not tempted to do wrong.
You
will have a feeling of security because
you
know that fundamentally all is well.
So
look up to God and praise Him.
Prayer For The Day I pray that I may be grateful for all my blessings.
I
pray that I may humble because I know that I do not deserve them.

Attitudes
"We find
that our old attitudes toward our instincts need to undergo drastic
revisions. Our desires for emotional security and wealth, for personal
prestige and power, for romance, and for family satisfactions - all these
have to be tempered and redirected. If we place instincts first, we have got
the cart before the horse; we shall be pulled backward into disillusionment.
But when we are willing to places spiritual growth first - then and only then
do we have a real chance."
Twelve Steps
and Twelve Traditions, p. 114
Thought
to Consider . . .
I have
learned that my actions are far more important than my thoughts.

Reflection
OUR
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The more
A.A. sticks to its primary purpose, the greater
will be
its helpful influence everywhere.
A.A. COMES OF AGE, p. 109
It is with
gratitude that I reflect on the early days of our
Fellowship
and those wise and loving "foresteppers" who
proclaimed
that we should not be diverted from our primary
purpose,
that of carrying the message to the alcoholic who
still
suffers.
I desire
to impart respect to those who labor in the field
of
alcoholism, being ever mindful that A.A. endorses no
causes
other than its own. I must remember that A.A. has
no
monopoly on miracle-making and I remain humbly
grateful
to a loving God who made A.A. possible.

Pot
Luck
“Improve your memory – tell the
truth.”
Toward
the end of my drinking my memory got worse and worse. To start with, my
mind was a big blur from being constantly loaded, or from recovering from a
blackout. In addition, it got harder and harder to remember what story
or excuse I had recently made up or who I had told what to. Because my
drinking had become the most important thing in my life I had begun lying to
protect it, and because most of the lies and stories I made up were followed
by a drinking binge, I couldn’t keep anything straight. It’s no wonder
people stopped hanging around me.
When
I got sober and my head began to clear, I went right on lying and telling
stories. As I worked the Steps what I realized was that I was lying to
protect my ego and get my own way. I quickly found the truth in the
statement that ‘self-centeredness and self-seeking’ was my natural state as
an untreated alcoholic. It took a lot of inventories and conversations
with my sponsor before I was ready to get honest. I also had to
uncover, discover and discard a lot of character defects that were keeping me
sick before I could fully recover.
Today
my life is much easier now that my default is to just tell the truth. I
no longer feel the need to defend or construct a big story because today I’ve
learned how to be responsible and honest. Today I go through life
looking for ways to be of service rather than to cheat or deceive. It’s
a wonderful feeling to be able to look someone in the eye again and feel a
part of the human race. And best of all, my memory has improved because
today I tell the truth.
