In
psychiatric terms, “the therapeutic value of the Alcoholics Anonymous
approach arises from its use of a religious or spiritual force to attack the
fundamental narcissism of the alcoholic …. This group relies upon an
emotional force, religion, to achieve an emotional result, namely the
over-throwing of the negative, hostile set of emotions and supplanting them
with a positive set in which the individual no longer need maintain his defiant
individuality but instead can live in peace and harmony with and in his
world, sharing and participating freely.” (Address by Dr. Harry M. Tiebout to
the American Psychiatric Association, Detroit, May 10, 1943.)
The greatest test of courage
on earth
is to bear defeat without
losing heart.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
And if I am only for myself, what am I?
~Unknown
Take heed that when effort
is too strenuous it leads to strain and when too slack to laziness. So make a
firm determination that you will adopt the middle way, not allowing yourself
to struggle or to slacken, but recognizing that faith, energy, mindfulness,
concentration, and wisdom are the fruits of a calm and equable way.

Step Eleven - "Sought through prayer
and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood
Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry
that out."
We also fall into another similar temptation. We form ideas as to what we think God's will is for other people. We say to ourselves, "This one ought to be cured of his fatal malady," or "That one ought to be relieved of his emotional pain," and we pray for these specific things. Such prayers, of course, are fundamentally good acts, but often they are based upon a supposition that we know God's will for the person for whom we pray. This means that side by side with an earnest prayer there can be a certain amount of presumption and conceit in us. It is A.A.'s experience that particularly in these cases we ought to pray that God's will, whatever it is, be done for others as well as for ourselves. p. 104 |

A.A. Thought For The Day
What a load wasting money puts on your shoulders! They say that members of A.A. have paid the highest initiation fee of any club members in the world, because we've wasted so much money on liquor. We'll never be able to figure out how much it was. We not only waste our own money, but also the money we should have spent on our families. When you come into A.A., that terrible load of wasted money falls off your shoulders. We alcoholics were getting round-shouldered from carrying all those loads that drinking put on our shoulders. But when we come into A.A., we get a wonderful feeling of release and freedom. Can I throw back my shoulders and look the whole world in the face again? Meditation For The Day I believe that the future is in the hands of God. He knows better than I what the future holds for me. I am not at the mercy of fate or buffeted about by life. I am being led in a very definite way, as I try to rebuild my life. I am the builder, but God is the architect. It is mine to build as best I can, under His guidance. Prayer For The Day I pray that I may depend on God, since He has planned my life. I pray that I may live my life as I believe God wants me to live it. |

Housecleaning
If we skip this vital step [Step Five], we may not overcome drinking. Time after time newcomers have tried to keep to themselves certain facts about their lives. Trying to avoid this humbling experience, they have turned to easier methods. Almost invariably they got drunk. Having persevered with the rest of the program, they wondered why they fell. We think the reason is that they never completed their housecleaning. c. 1976, 2001 AAWS Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 72-3 Thought to Consider . . . Reflection
THE JOY OF SHARING
Life will take on new meaning. To watch people
recover, to
see them help others, to watch loneliness
vanish, to see a
fellowship grow up about you, to have a
host of friends—
this is an experience you must not miss.
We know you will
not want to miss it. Frequent contact
with newcomers and
with each other is the bright spot of our
lives.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 89
To know that each newcomer with whom I
share has the
opportunity to experience the relief that
I have found in this
Fellowship fills me with joy and
gratitude. I feel that all the
things described in A.A. will come to
pass for them, as they
have for me, if they seize the
opportunity and embrace the
program fully.

Pot
Luck
-- Vince Lombardi What's the difference between success and failure? Ideal conditions? Half again as much effort? Twice the talent? Ten times "the breaks"? Or is it simply that some people have what it takes and some people don't? Vince Lombardi, the football coach who brought the Green Bay Packers from fifteen losing seasons to successive world championships, thought success was a matter of inches. A bit more concentration, one extra push in practice, a consistent second effort for a tiny additional gain. He didn't ask his players to be something other than they were - he asked them to improve their best an inch at a time. He knew inches add up, in life as in sports. In life as in football, it is often the little things that count: going to meetings when we feel like staying home, or speaking our minds, no matter how insignificant our opinion may seem. When we feel like simply hiding - inches make the difference. Today, I will be aware that I am a champion in the making. I may not make a complete turnaround today, but I will make progress.
