"This
life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health,
but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet
what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet
finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road. All
does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified."
~Martin Luther

12&12
Step Eleven - "Sought through prayer
and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood
Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry
that out."
Next came the expression of an aspiration and a hope for himself. He hoped, God willing, that he might be able to find some of these treasures, too. This he would try to do by what he called self-forgetting. What did he mean by "self forgetting," and how did he propose to accomplish that? He thought it better to give comfort than to receive it; better to understand than to be understood; better to forgive than to be forgiven. p. 101 |
Twenty-Four
Hours
A.A. Thought For The Day
In the beginning, you want to get sober, but you're helpless, so you turn to a Power greater than yourself and by trusting in that Power, you get the strength to stop drinking. From then on, you want to keep sober, and that's a matter of reeducating your mind. After a while, you get so that you really enjoy simple, healthy, normal living. You really get a kick out of life without the artificial stimulus of alcohol. All you have to do is look around at the members of any A.A. group and you will see how their outlook has changed. Is my outlook on life changing? Meditation For The Day I will never forget to say thank you to God, even on the greyest days. My attitude will be one of humility and gratitude. Saying thank you to God is a daily practice that is absolutely necessary. If a day is not one of thankfulness, the practice has to be repeated until it becomes so. Gratitude is a necessity for those who are seeking a better life. Prayer For The Day I pray that gratitude will bring humility. I pray that humility will bring me to live a better life. |

Courage
I looked
around me at people who seemed happy and tried to analyze their
happiness, and it seemed to me that without exception these
people had something or somebody they loved very much. I didn't
have the courage to love; I was not even sure I had the
capacity. Fear of rejection and its ensuing pain were not to be risked .

Reflection
"LET'S KEEP IT SIMPLE"
A few hours later I took my leave of Dr.
Bob. . . . The
wonderful, old, broad smile was on his
face as he said
almost jokingly, "Remember, Bill,
let's not louse this thing
up. Let's keep it simple!" I turned
away, unable to say a
word. That was the last time I ever saw
him.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS COMES OF AGE, p. 214
After years of sobriety I occasionally
ask myself: "Can it be
this simple?" Then, at meetings, I
see former cynics and
skeptics who have walked the A. A. path
out of hell by
packaging their lives, without alcohol,
into twenty-four
hour segments, during which they practice
a few principles
to the best of their individual
abilities. And then I know
again that, while it isn't always easy,
if I keep it simple, it
works.

Pot
Luck
I left because there was no room
for me. But you could tell me not to go. Say it to me. Tell me not to go.
--Stephen Sondheim Sunday in the Park with George To leave someone we love is to knowingly break a vital connection. Even if we chose to leave, we wonder why it often hurts so much. But the heart isn't logical; it feels the trauma of the loss and the responsibility of being the one to say good-bye. Love is a process; it doesn't end because we say good-bye. No matter how painful or harmful a relationship was, there were good things about it, just as there were lovable things about the other person. The challenge is to accept with grace the choice we've made and to forgive whatever hurt we've received. We can refuse to indulge in self-righteousness or indignation. Those feelings are born out of the illusion of power that comes with being the one who leaves. Most of all, we can grieve the loss and then let go of the person we loved so that we can heal. I have to break some relationships because it is healthier for my recovery. Still, I can hurt and grieve over the loss of those relationships.
