Men acquire a particular quality by constantly
acting a particular way...you
become just by performing just actions, temperate
by performing temperate
actions, brave by performing brave actions.
~Aristotle
I thought I was a "can not."
The Steps helped me to discover that I was a
"will not."
~As We See It
Life is creation.
Self and circumstances are the raw material. ~ Dorothy M. Richardson
The life of the alcoholic is very similar to a
jigsaw puzzle.
In our days of drinking, the whole of life
appeared as simply a jumbled mass of unrelated
pieces impossible to unscramble.
In AA someone gave us the corner piece
and from this we slowly and laboriously found one
piece after another.
Each piece we fitted in made it easier to find
the next piece.
First we found understanding, then hope, then
determination, then sobriety,
then unselfishness, then love, then faith and
finally God. (HP)
All the pieces are in place finally, the picture
makes sense and
it is beautiful to behold.

Book Quote
"Our
hope is that when this chip of a book is launched on the world
tide of alcoholism, defeated drinkers will seize upon it, to follow its suggestions. Many, we are sure, will rise to their feet and march on. They will approach still other sick ones and fellowships of Alcoholics Anonymous may spring up in each city and hamlet, havens for those who must find a way out." ~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, A Vision For You, Page 153~ |

Tradition Three - "The only requirement for
A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking."
To establish this principle of membership took years of harrowing experience. In our early time, nothing seemed so fragile, so easily breakable as an A.A. group. Hardly an alcoholic we approached paid any attention; most of those who did join us were like flickering candles in a windstorm. Time after time, their uncertain flames blew out and couldn't be relighted. Our unspoken, constant thought was "Which of us may be the next?" p. 139 |

A.A. Thought For The Day
Drinking cuts you off from God. No matter how you were brought up, no matter what your religion is, no matter if you say you believe in God, nevertheless you build up a wall between you and God by your drinking. You know you're not living the way God wants you to. As a result, you have that terrible remorse. When you come into A.A., you begin to get right with other people and with God. A sober life is a happy life, because by giving up drinking we've got rid of our loneliness and remorse. Do I have real fellowship with other people and with God? Meditation For The Day I believe that all sacrifice and all suffering is of value to me. When I am in pain, I am being tested. Can I trust God, no matter how I feel? Can I say Thy will be done, no matter how much I am defeated? If I can, my faith is real and practical. It works in bad times as well as in good times. The Divine Will is working in a way that is beyond my finite mind to understand, but I can still trust in it. Prayer For The Day I pray that I may take my suffering in my stride. I pray that I may accept pain and defeat as part of God's plan for my spiritual growth. |

Courage
I looked around me at people who seemed happy and tried to analyze their happiness, and it seemed to me that without exception these people had something or somebody they loved very much. I didn't have the courage to love; I was not even sure I had the capacity. Fear of rejection and its ensuing pain were not to be risked . . . c. 1976 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 546 (does not appear in 4th Edition) ^*^*^*^*^ Thought to Consider . . . Courage is fear that has said its prayers. *~*~*AACRONYMS*~*~* A A = Altered Attitudes |

OUR COMMON WELFARE COMES
FIRST
The unity of
Alcoholics Anonymous is the most cherished
quality our
Society has . . . We stay whole, or A. A. dies
TWELVE STEPS
AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 129
Our Traditions
are key elements in the ego deflation
process
necessary to achieve and maintain sobriety in
Alcoholics
Anonymous. The First Tradition reminds me
not to take
credit, or authority, for my recovery. Placing
our common
welfare first reminds me not to become a
healer in this
program; I am still one of the patients. Self-effacing
elders built
the ward. Without it, I doubt I would
be alive.
Without the group, few alcoholics would recover.
The active
role in renewed surrender of will enables me
to step aside
from the need to dominate, the desire for
recognition,
both of which played so great a part in my
active
alcoholism. Deferring my personal desires for the
greater good
of group growth contributes toward A.A.
unity that is
central to all recovery. It helps me to
remember that
the whole is greater than the sum of all its
parts.

SPONSORSHIP
A man in a hot air balloon realized that he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted another man below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am." The man below replied, "You’re in a hot air ball hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude." "You must be a sponsor," said the balloonist. "I am," replied the man, "how did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonists, "everything you told me is, technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve delayed my trip." The man below responded, "You must be a sponsee" "I am,: replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and you expect other people to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault."
