Your Daily Reprieve for Friday February  28, 2014

From Stuart, Florida

Build in the uncertainty principle. In quantum physics, the uncertainty principle
is the premise that the more you know about where something is, the less you
know about where it is likely to be next, and when. In the rest of the world, it
means that your planning brings you closer to having things not work out
precisely as you plan. The more your control, the more visible the things you
cannot control become. The uncertainty principle cannot be engineered
out of life. All we can do is relax and enjoy its unexpected fruit.
-- The Geranium Farm

Whatever you try to control controls you!
~Unknown

I do not want to foresee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present.
God has given me no control over the moment following.
-- Mohandas Gandhi

"With respect to its own affairs, the collective conscience of the group will, given time, almost surely demonstrate its perfect dependability. The group conscience will, in the end, prove a far more infallible guide for group affairs than the decision of any individual member, however good or wise he may be."
~Grapevine: Bill W., January, 1948

Big Book Quote

"In this book you read again and again that faith did for us what we
could not do for ourselves. We hope you are convinced now that God can
remove whatever self will has blocked you off from Him. If you have
already made a decision, and an inventory of your grosser handicaps,
you have made a good beginning. That being so you have swallowed and
digested some big chunks of truth about yourself."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, How It Works, pg. 70~

AUSTIN RIPLEY - AMARILLO, TX 10-13-56

Austin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the Top-O-Texas Roundup in Amarillo, Texas on October 13, 1956. Austin Ripley was a spiritual mentor of Father Joseph Martin. Father Martin is frequently mentioning Austin in his talks. In this AA talk, Austin pays quite a bit of tribute to the wives of alcoholics and continues on to give a very spiritual talk. He wraps it up by saying, “When our hands are finally in that last cold clasp of death, the only things we shall own are those we have given away.”

826 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Tradition Seven - "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

"I heard all this quite plainly, as I was piously trying to convert a newcomer who sat next to me. The hat came in my direction, and I reached into my pocket. Still working on my prospect, I fumbled and came up with a fifty-cent piece. Somehow it looked like a very big coin. Hastily, I dropped it back and fished out a dime, which clinked thinly as I dropped it in the hat. Hats never got folding money in those days.

Twenty Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

We should be free from alcohol for good. It's out of our hands and in the hands of God,
so we don't need to worry about it or even think about it any more. But if we haven't
done this honestly and fully, the chances are that it will become our problem again. Since
we don't trust God to take care of our problem for us, we reach out and take the problem
back to ourselves. Then it's our problem again and we're in the same old mess we were
in before. Do I trust God to take care of the problem for me?

Meditation For The Day

No work is of value without preparation. Every spiritual work must have behind it much
spiritual preparation. Cut short times of prayer and times of spiritual preparation and
many hours of work may be profitless. From the point of view of God, one poor tool
working all the time, but doing bad work because of lack of preparation, is of small value
compared with a sharp, keen, perfect instrument working only for a short time, but that
turns out perfect work because of long hours of spiritual preparation.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may spend more time alone with God. I pray that I may get more strength
and joy from such times, so that they will add much to my work.

Cheerfulness
B
ut we aren't a glum lot. . .
We absolutely insist on enjoying life. . .
So we think cheerfulness and laughter
make for usefulness.
Outsiders are sometimes shocked when we
burst into merriment over a seemingly tragic
experience out of the past.
But why shouldn't we laugh?
We have recovered,
and have been given the power to help others

Daily Reflection

WHAT? NO PRESIDENT?

When told that our Society has no president having
authority to govern it, no treasurer who can compel the
payment of any dues, . . . our friends gasp and exclaim,
"This simply can't be. . . ."
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 132

When I finally made my way to A.A., I could not believe
that there was no treasurer to "compel the payment of
dues." I could not imagine an organization that didn't
require monetary contributions in return for a service. It
was my first and, thus far, only experience with getting
"something for nothing." Because I did not feel used or
conned by those in A.A., I was able to approach the
program free from bias and with an open mind. They
wanted nothing from me. What could I lose? I thank God
for the wisdom of the early founders who knew so well the
alcoholic's disdain for being manipulated.

Developing ourselves

We must realize in our hearts that we are becoming better people. We do this by using our highest standards and making our best efforts. We do this, in part, by turning our lives over to God, who will guide us if we sincerely ask.

As we develop, we find we're offering much more to life than just avoiding mood-altering drugs. We are coming to love others and to help them by thinking, feeling, and behaving maturely in all situations.

Am I developing into a better person?

Higher Power, help me realize that my new life is not just about changing my past but about developing my future as well.
