“Suffering is no longer a
menace to be evaded at any cost. When it does come, no matter how grievously,
we realize that it too has its purpose. It is our great teacher because it
reveals our defects and so pushes us forward into the paths of progress. The
pain of drinking did just this for us. And so can any other pain.” ~AA Co-Founder, Bill W., November 1958, Editorial, AA
Grapevine I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is
not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do. —Leonardo da Vinci If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else. —Booker T. Washington And perhaps even the smallest efforts matter more than you
know. |

BIG BOOK QUOTE My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me,
good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of
character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows.
Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen." P76 |

REFLECTIONS THE PAST
IS OVER A.A.
experience has taught us we cannot live alone with our
pressing problems and the character defects which cause or
aggravate them. If. . . Step Four . . . has revealed in stark
relief those experiences we'd rather not remember . . . then
the need to quit living by ourselves with those tormenting
ghosts of yesterday gets more urgent than ever. We have to
talk to somebody about them. TWELVE STEPS
AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 55 Whatever is
done is over. It cannot be changed. But my attitude
about it can be changed through talking with those who have gone
before and with sponsors. I can wish the past never
was, but if I change my actions in regard to what I have done,
my attitude will change. I won't have to wish the past
away. I can change my feelings and attitudes, but only through
my actions and the help of my fellow alcoholics. |

POT LUCK Forgiving Ourselves I love the idea that when we
know better, we do better. In early recovery, I found it impossibly hard to
forgive myself for some of the things that I had done during my period of
active addiction. But hating myself for those things took too high a toll, and
I had to find a way to let go and move on. Two things helped me with
self-forgiveness. The first was believing the recovering people around me who
warned me that staying in shame and self-hatred would hinder - and possibly
even destroy - my recovery process. That felt true to me. The second thing
was embracing the idea that I heard from others (also in recovery) that when
we know better, we do better. As the great Maya Angelou said, "Forgive
yourself for not knowing what you didn't know before you learned it."
How liberating is that? Forgiving
ourselves is one sure way to practice radical self‑compassion. Try it? She
