Your Daily Reprieve for Tuesday November 25, 2025

From Waynesville, NC

It’s when you run away that you’re most likely to stumble.

-Casey Robinson

Life is never going to give up on you because there is something important for you to do.  One of the primary purposes and processes of life is the development of character.  Your character—your nature, the distinctive qualities of your essence, what makes you you—is developed through experience.  If you do not understand that character development is an important process of life, you may be tempted to give up when things get rough. . . . When life detects that there is an opportunity for you to advance the nature of your character, it will send the perfect situation and people your way.  Your job is to respond to everything in a manner that develops and strengthens your character.

-Iyanla Vanzant

Life is a long lesson in humility.
~James M.Barrie

A soul who is not close to nature is far away from what is called spirituality.

In order to be spiritual one must communicate,

and especially one must communicate with nature;

 one must feel nature.
~Hazrat Inayat Khan

Big Book Quote

How dark it is before the dawn! In reality that was the beginning of my last debauch. I was soon to be catapulted into what I like to call the fourth dimension of existence. I was to know happiness, peace, and usefulness, in a way of life that is incredibly more wonderful as time passes.

Step Twelve - "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

When alcoholism strikes, very unnatural situations may develop which work against marriage partnership and compatible union. If the man is affected, the wife must become the head of the house, often the breadwinner. As matters get worse, the husband becomes a sick and irresponsible child who needs to be looked after and extricated from endless scrapes and impasses. Very gradually, and usually without any realization of the fact, the wife is forced to become the mother of an erring boy. And if she had a strong maternal instinct to begin with, the situation is aggravated. Obviously not much partnership can exist under these conditions. The wife usually goes on doing the best she knows how, but meanwhile the alcoholic alternately loves and hates her maternal care. A pattern is thereby established that may take a lot of undoing later on. Nevertheless, under the influence or A.A.’s Twelve Steps, these situations are often set right. *

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

I am not so envious of other people, nor am I so jealous of other people's possessions and talents. When I was drinking, I was secretly full of jealousy and envy of those people who could drink normally, who had the love and respect of their families, who lived a normal life and were accepted as equals by their friends. I pretended to myself that I was as good as they were, but I knew it wasn't so. Now I don't have to be envious any more. I try not to want what I don't deserve. I'm content to live with what I have earned by my efforts to live the right way. More power to those who
have what I have not. At least, I'm trying. Have I got rid of the poison of envy?

Meditation For The Day

"My soul is restless till it finds its rest in Thee." A river flows on, until it loses itself in the sea. Our spirits long for rest in the Spirit of God. We yearn to realize a peace, a rest, a satisfaction that we have never found in the world or its pursuits. Some are not conscious of their need, and shut down the doors of their spirits against the spirit of God. They are unable to have true peace.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may feel the divine unrest.

I pray that my soul may find its rest in God.

Awakening

"Is sobriety all that we are to expect of a spiritual awakening? Again, the voice of A.A. speaks up. No, sobriety is only a bare beginning, it is only the first gift of the first awakening. If more gifts are to be received, our awakening has to go on. And if it does go on, we find that bit by bit we can discard the old life - the one that did not work - for a new life that can and does work under any conditions whatever. Regardless of worldly success or failure, regardless of pain or joy, regardless of sickness or health or even of death itself, a new life of endless possibilities can be lived if we are willing to continue our awakening."

DAILY REFLECTIONS

A POWERFUL TRADITION

In the years before the publication of the book, "Alcoholics

Anonymous," we had no name. . . . By a narrow majority

the verdict was for naming our book "The Way Out" . . .

One of our early lone members . . . found exactly twelve

books already titled "The Way Out" . . . So "Alcoholics

Anonymous" became first choice. That's how we got a name

for our book of experience, a name for our movement and,

as we are now beginning to see, a tradition of the greatest

spiritual import.

"A.A. TRADITION: HOW IT DEVELOPED," pp. 35-36

Beginning with Bill's momentous decision in Akron to

make a telephone call rather than a visit to the hotel bar,

how often has a Higher Power made itself felt at crucial

moments in our history! The eventual importance that the

principle of anonymity would acquire was but dimly

perceived, if at all, in those early days. There seems to have

been an element of chance even in the choice of a name for

our Fellowship.

God is no stranger to anonymity and often appears in

human affairs in the guises of "luck," "chance," or

"coincidence." If anonymity, somewhat fortuitously,

became the spiritual basis for all of our Traditions, perhaps

God was acting anonymously on our behalf.

Optimism

The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds, and the pessimist fears that this is true.

~James Branch Cabell

Optimists say that there are far more successes than failures in recovery. Pessimists say the opposite. The program says that anyone in recovery is a success. The program never fails, but individuals do because they give up too easily and too quickly.

When we decide to work closely with others, we have already declared that we will be optimistic about succeeding. During our excessive years, we suffered all the pessimism we ever again want to suffer. When we gather at a meeting, we are former pessimists who join in being optimists about winning. The irony is that this makes us winners.

Two people were served hamburgers for lunch.

The pessimist muttered, "What a small dab of meat," while the optimist exclaimed, "What a big bun they serve here."
