Security isn't what the wise person looks for; it's
opportunity. And once we begin looking for that, we find it on every
side. You can measure opportunity with the same yardstick that measures the risk involved. They go together. Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity; they seem more afraid of life than of death. Happiness can exist only in acceptance. “God has given me this day to use as I wish; Alcoholics Anonymous shows me how to live it without a drink.” ~ Somerville, Massachusetts, September 1995 |
Big Book
Quote The very practical approach to his problems, the absence of
intolerance of any kind, the informality, the genuine democracy, the uncanny
understanding which these people had were irresistible. P160 |

"WORTH" OF SOBRIETY Every
A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining
outside contributions. TWELVE STEPS
AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 160 When I go
shopping I look at the prices and if I need what I see, I buy
it and pay. Now that I am supposed to be in rehabilitation,
I have to straighten out my life. When I go to a
meeting, I take a coffee with sugar and milk, sometimes
more than one. But at the collection time, I am either too
busy to take money out of my purse, or I do not have enough,
but I am there because I need this meeting. I heard
someone suggest dropping the price of a beer into the basket, and
I thought, that's too much! I almost never give one dollar.
Like many others, I rely on the more generous members to
finance the Fellowship. I forget that it takes money to
rent the meeting room, buy my milk, sugar and cups. I will
pay, without hesitation, ninety cents for a cup of coffee at
a restaurant after the meeting; I always have money for
that. So, how much is my sobriety and my inner peace worth? |
Pot Luck
The
culmination of these gifts is perhaps the most profound: the rediscovery of
yourself. Free from the grip of addiction, you can rebuild your values,
restore relationships, and reconnect with your true self. This journey of
self-discovery and self-reliance is the ultimate reward of sobriety. You
will face challenges and bad days, but with each sober day, your confidence
grows. You learn that you don’t need substances to cope—you have the strength
and resilience within yourself to navigate life’s ups and downs. Reclaiming
your life and identity is a powerful and liberating experience. Sobriety
allows you to explore your passions, pursue your goals, and develop a deep
sense of self-awareness and self-worth. It empowers you to live authentically
and to create a life that reflects your true values and aspirations. The
path to sobriety is filled with remarkable gifts that transform lives.
Acceptance, humility, gratitude, community, and the rediscovery of self are
profound rewards that await those who choose to embrace sobriety. For anyone
struggling with addiction, or for their loved ones seeking to support them,
understanding these gifts can provide the motivation and hope needed to take
that crucial step towards a better life. |
