“By revealing our secrets and

thereby ridding ourselves of guilt

we can actually change our thinking

and by altering our thinking

we can change ourselves.

What we will be tomorrow

is determined by what we think today.”

~Brentwood, New York, May 1991

Let us put ourselves before ourselves and look at ourselves.

The bravest moment of a person’s life

is the moment when that person

looks at him or herself objectively

without wincing, without complaining.

However, self-examination that does not result in action is dangerous.

What am I going to do about what I see?

The action called for is surrender—of ourselves to God.

-Eric Liddell

Many wealthy people are little more

than janitors of their possessions.

-Frank Lloyd Wright

Wealth is a relative thing

since those who have little and want less

are richer than those who have much but want more.

 -Charles Caleb Colton

Big Book Quote

Many of us said to our Maker, as we understood Him: "God, I offer myself to Thee-to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.

Tradition Seven - "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

Probably no A.A. Tradition had the labor pains this one did. In early times, we were all broke. When you add to this the habitual supposition that people ought to give money to alcoholics trying to stay sober, it can be understood why we thought we deserved a pile of folding money. What great things A.A. would be able to do with it! But oddly enough, people who had money thought otherwise. They figured that it was high time we now--sober--paid our own way. So our Fellowship stayed poor because it had to.

p. 160

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

In the beginning, you want to get sober, but you're
helpless, so you turn to a Power greater than yourself
and by trusting in that Power, you get the strength to
stop drinking. From then on, you want to keep sober, and
that's a matter of reeducating your mind. After a while,
you get so that you really enjoy simple, healthy, normal
living. You really get a kick out of life without the
artificial stimulus of alcohol. All you have to do is
look around at the members of any A.A. group and you will
see how their outlook has changed. Is my outlook on life
changing?

Meditation For The Day

I will never forget to say thank you to God, even on the
greyest days. My attitude will be one of humility and
gratitude. Saying thank you to God is a daily practice
that is absolutely necessary. If a day is not one of
thankfulness, the practice has to be repeated until it
becomes so. Gratitude is a necessity for those who are
seeking a better life.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that gratitude will bring humility. I pray that
humility will bring me to live a better life.

Today

"I realize that all I'm guaranteed in life is today. The poorest person has no less and the wealthiest has no more - each of us has but one day. What we do with it is our own business; how we use it is up to us individually. I feel that I have been restored to health and sanity these past years not through my own efforts nor as a result of anything I may have done, but because I've come to believe - to really believe - that alone I can do nothing. That my own innate selfishness and stubbornness are the evils which, if left unguarded, can drive me to alcohol. I have come to believe that my illness is spiritual as well as physical and mental, and I know that for help in the spiritual sphere I have to turn to a Higher Power."

Daily Reflection

"LET'S KEEP IT SIMPLE"

A few hours later I took my leave of Dr. Bob. . . . The

wonderful, old, broad smile was on his face as he said

almost jokingly, "Remember, Bill, let's not louse this thing

up. Let's keep it simple!" I turned away, unable to say a

word. That was the last time I ever saw him.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS COMES OF AGE, p. 214

After years of sobriety I occasionally ask myself: "Can it be

this simple?" Then, at meetings, I see former cynics and

skeptics who have walked the A. A. path out of hell by

packaging their lives, without alcohol, into twenty-four

hour segments, during which they practice a few principles

to the best of their individual abilities. And then I know

again that, while it isn't always easy, if I keep it simple, it

works.

A New approach to Freedom

Staying Sober

Most of us discover that we’ve had mixed-up ideas about the nature of freedom.

Real freedom is not simply doing exactly as one pleases; privileges would be the correct term for that. And desirable as political freedom is, it cannot give us what we’re really seeking.

We should approach freedom by recognizing that we’re really seeking release from the bondage of self. This self-concern can be one of the worst tyrannies humans face. As we are released from the bondage of self, we learn that our choices begin to multiply. We make wise decisions instead of being driven to certain actions. We are truly free.

Today I’ll enjoy a freedom that is available to anybody who seeks it wholeheartedly. I’ll know it as the freedom only God can offer.
