"Forget the mistake, remember the lesson"

~Arnold Schwarzenegger

Through pride we are ever deceiving ourselves.  But deep down below the surface of the average conscience a still, small voice says to us, "Something is out of tune."      -Carl Jung

Never preen yourself that you are prideless:  for pride is more invisible than an ant's footprint on a black stone in the dark of night.     -Jami

We don’t need greatness. We need goodness — those small acts of kindness that make another human being feel acknowledged.
Tara D. Sonenshine

Big Book Quote

Notice that the word "fear" is bracketed alongside the difficulties with Mr. Brown, Mrs. Jones, the employer, and the wife. This short word somehow touches about every aspect of our lives. It was an evil and corroding thread; the fabric of our existence was shot through with it. It set in motion trains of circumstances which brought us misfortune we felt we didn't deserve. But did not we, ourselves, set the ball rolling?

Step Twelve - "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

Then perhaps life, as it has a way of doing, suddenly hands us a great big lump that we can't begin to swallow, let alone digest. We fail to get a worked-for promotion. We lose that good job. Maybe there are serious domestic or romantic difficulties, or perhaps that boy we thought God was looking after becomes a military casualty.
What then? Have we alcoholics in A.A. got, or can we get, the resources to meet these calamities which come to so many? These were problems of life which we could never face up to. Can we now, with the help of God as we understand Him, handle them as well and as bravely as our nonalcoholic friends often do? Can we transform these calamities into assets, sources of growth and comfort to ourselves and those about us? Well, we surely have a chance if we switch from "two-stepping" to "twelve-stepping," if we are willing to receive that grace of God which can sustain and strengthen us in any catastrophe.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

How seriously do I take my obligations to A.A.?

Have I taken all the good I can get out of it

and then let my obligations slide?

Or do I constantly feel a deep debt of gratitude

and a deep sense of loyalty

to the whole A.A. movement?

Am I not only grateful but also proud

to be a part of such a wonderful fellowship,

which is doing such marvelous work among alcoholics?

Am I glad to be a part of the great work that A.A. is doing

and do I feel a deep obligation to carry on that work at

every opportunity? Do I feel that I owe A.A. my loyalty and devotion?

Meditation For The Day

If your heart is right, your world will be right.

The beginning of all reform must be in yourself.

It's not what happens to you, it's how you take it.

However restricted your circumstances,

however little you may be able to remedy financial affairs,

you can always turn to your inward self and,

seeing something not in order there,

seek to right it. And as all reform is from within outward,

you will always find that the outward

is improved as the inward is improved.

As you improve yourself, your outward

circumstances will change for the better.

The power released from within yourself

will change your outward life.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that the hidden power within me may be released.

I pray that I may not imprison the spirit that is within me.

Responsibility

"Our spiritual way of life is safe for future generations if, as a Society, we resist the temptation to receive money from the outside world. But this leaves us with a responsibility - one that every member ought to understand. We cannot skimp when the treasurer of our group passes the hat. Our groups, our areas, and A.A. as a whole will not function unless our services are sufficient and their bills are paid. When we meet and defeat the temptation to take large gifts, we are only being prudent. But when we are generous with the hat we give a token that we are grateful for our blessings and evidence that we are eager to share what we have found with all those who still suffer."

Daily Reflection

THROUGHOUT EACH DAY

This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our

lifetime.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 84

During my early years in A. A. I saw Step Ten as a

suggestion that I periodically look at my behavior and

reactions. If there was something wrong, I should admit it;

if an apology was necessary, I should give one. After a few

years of sobriety I felt I should undertake a selfexamination

more frequently. Not until several more years

of sobriety had elapsed did I realize the full meaning of

Step Ten, and the word "continued." "Continued" does not

mean occasionally, or frequently. It means throughout each

day.

Is Life Unfair?

Justice

The glib remark “Life is Unfair” is sometimes used to dismiss any concern about trouble or seeming injustice. This usually implies that all such matters are part of God’s plan….. that somehow God couldn’t create life without making it unfair. But nobody really knows whether life is unfair or not, since what we see is only a small part of it.

We should know, however, that we can practice fairness ourselves. We will live better if we forget how unfair life can be and make the best of the opportunities we have.

Some of us could even argue that life treated us unfairly by giving us a susceptibility to alcoholism. In the long run, this turned out to be an opportunity to live the Twelve Step program. Some of us even consider this to be outworking of divine justice that has proved to be eminently fair. As one AA member put it, It was a case of one of the worst things becoming one of the best that ever happened to me !

I’ll not let any seeming unfairness or injustice keep me from doing my best today. My real belief is that there is an eternal justice underlying all things.

Committee Consideration

from the 73rd General Service Conference

In response to a Committee Consideration from the 73rd General Service Conference

regarding any possible future changes to literature written by A.A.’s founders,

that committee agreed it would be beneficial to gather shared experience

from the Fellowship regarding this topic.
