Your Daily Reprieve 02.28.21

Your Daily Reprieve for Sunday February 28, 2021

From Jacksonville, FL

I am entirely on the side of mystery.

I mean, any attempt to explain away the mystery is ridiculous.

I believe in the profound and unfathomable

mystery of life which has a sort of divine quality about it.

 -Aldous Huxley

As we learn to accept our character flaws and broken moments,

and as we learn to accept ourselves for the times we fail and fall short in life,

we grow in our capacity to accept and forgive others.

And as we learn to have compassion for,

and maybe even to gently and nonjudgmentally cradle what we don’t like in ourselves,

we, in turn, may very well end up serving as an incarnate source

of compassion for others who are struggling

with self-acceptance and self-forgiveness.

-Gary Egeberg

“I borrowed others' faith for a long time,

and now I'm beginning to get a bit of my own.”

~Grapevine: Atlanta, Ga., August 2001

The love of God is constantly inviting us to review our childish emotional judgments,

& now to accept the good things of life & ourselves,

of our being, of the people, & the cosmos, & to be grateful for them.

Because gratitude, by all odds,

is one of the basic dispositions for growth in the spiritual journey.
~Fr. Thomas Keating

Big Book Quote

"Simple, but not easy; a price had to be paid. It meant destruction

of self-centeredness. I must turn in all things to the Father of

Light who presides over us all."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, Bill's Story, pg. 14~

Step Five - "Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs."

What are we likely to receive from Step Five? For one thing, we shall get rid of that terrible sense of isolation we've always had. Almost without exception, alcoholics are tortured by loneliness. Even before our drinking got bad and people began to cut us off, nearly all of us suffered the feeling that we didn't quite belong. Either we were shy, and dared not draw near others, or we were apt to be noisy good fellows craving attention and companionship, but never getting it--at least to our way of thinking. There was always that mysterious barrier we could neither surmount nor understand. It was as if we were actors on a stage, suddenly realizing that we did not know a single line of our parts. That's one reason we loved alcohol too well. It did let us act extemporaneously. But even Bacchus boomeranged on us; we were finally struck down and left in terrified loneliness.

p. 57

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

We should be free from alcohol for good.

It's out of our hands and in the hands of God,
so we don't need to worry about it or even think about it any more.

But if we haven't done this honestly and fully,

the chances are that it will become our problem again.

Since we don't trust God to take care of our problem for us,

we reach out and take the problem
back to ourselves.

Then it's our problem again and we're in the same old mess we were
in before. Do I trust God to take care of the problem for me?

Meditation For The Day

No work is of value without preparation.

Every spiritual work must have behind it much
spiritual preparation. Cut short times of prayer and times

of spiritual preparation and
many hours of work may be profitless.

From the point of view of God, one poor tool
working all the time, but doing bad work because of lack of preparation,

is of small value compared with a sharp, keen,

perfect instrument working only for a short time, but that
turns out perfect work because of long hours of spiritual preparation.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may spend more time alone with God.

I pray that I may get more strength
and joy from such times, so that they will add much to my work.

Family Matters

N
ow and then the family will be plagued by specters from the past, for the drinking career of almost every alcoholic has been marked by escapades, funny, humiliating, shameful or tragic. The first impulse will be to bury these skeletons in a dark closet and padlock the door. The family may be possessed by the idea that future happiness can be based only upon forgetfulness of the past. We think that such a view is self-centered and in direct conflict with the new way of living.

Daily Reflection

WHAT? NO PRESIDENT?

When told that our Society has no president having

authority to govern it, no treasurer who can compel the

payment of any dues, . . . our friends gasp and exclaim,

"This simply can't be. . . ."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 132

When I finally made my way to A.A., I could not believe

that there was no treasurer to "compel the payment of

dues." I could not imagine an organization that didn't

require monetary contributions in return for a service. It

was my first and, thus far, only experience with getting

"something for nothing." Because I did not feel used or

conned by those in A.A., I was able to approach the

program free from bias and with an open mind. They

wanted nothing from me. What could I lose? I thank God

for the wisdom of the early founders who knew so well the

alcoholic's disdain for being manipulated.

Pot Luck

Anthony de Mello –

A man found an eagle's egg and put it in a nest of a barnyard hen. The eaglet hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with them.
All his life the eagle did what the barnyard chicks did, thinking he was a barnyard chicken. He scratched the earth for worms and insects. He clucked and cackled. And he would thrash his wings and fly a few feet into the air. Years passed and the eagle grew very old. One day he saw a magnificent bird above him in the cloudless sky. It glided in graceful majesty among the powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of its strong golden wings. The old eagle looked up in awe. "Who's that?" he asked.
"That's the eagle, the king of the birds," said his neighbor. "He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth we're chickens." So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that's what he thought he was.

Anthony de Mello

There's a famous story about the lion who came upon a flock of sheep and to his amazement found a lion among the sheep. It was a lion who had been brought up by the sheep ever since he was a cub. It would bleat like a sheep and run around like a sheep. The lion went straight for him, and when the sheep lion stood in front of the real one, he trembled in every limb. And the lion said to him, "What are you doing among the sheep?" And the sheep-lion said, "I am a sheep." And the lion said, "Oh no you're not. You're coming with me." So he took the sheep-lion to a pool and said, "Look!" And when the sheep-lion looked at his reflection in the water, he let out a mighty roar, and in that moment he was transformed. He was never the same again.

Eckhart Tolle –

A beggar had been sitting by the side of a road for over thirty years. One day a stranger walked by. "Spare some change?" mumbled the beggar, mechanically holding out his old baseball cap. "I have nothing to give you," said the stranger. Then he asked: "What's that you are sitting on?" "Nothing," replied the beggar. "Just an old box. I have been sitting on it for as long as I can remember." "Ever looked inside?" asked the stranger. "No," said the beggar. "What's the point? There's nothing in there." "Have a look inside," insisted the stranger. The beggar managed to pry open the lid. With astonishment, disbelief, and elation, he saw that the box was filled with gold.
I am that stranger who has nothing to give you and who is telling you to look inside. Not inside any box, as in the parable, but somewhere even closer: inside yourself.
