BIG BOOK QUOTE

In this book you read again and again that faith did

for us what we could not do for ourselves. We hope you are convinced now that God can remove whatever self-will has blocked you off from Him.

Tradition Seven - "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions."

SELF-SUPPORTING alcoholics? Who ever heard of such a thing? Yet we find that's what we have to be. This principle is telling evidence of the profound change that A.A. has wrought in all of us. Everybody knows that active alcoholics scream that they have no troubles money can't cure. Always, we've had our hands out. Time out of mind we've been dependent upon somebody, usually money-wise. When a society composed entirely of alcoholics says it's going to pay its bills, that's really news.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

Liquor used to be my friend. I used to have a lot of fun
drinking. Practically all the fun I had was connected
with drinking. But the time came when liquor became my
enemy. I don't know just when liquor turned against me
and became my enemy, but I know it happened, because I
began to get into trouble. And since I realize that liquor
is now my enemy, my main business now is keeping sober.
Making a living or keeping a house is no longer my main
business. It's secondary to the business of keeping sober.
Do I realize that my main business is keeping sober?

Meditation For The Day

I can depend on God to supply me with all the power I need
to face any situation, provided that I will sincerely
believe in that power and honestly ask for it, at the same
time making all my life conform to what I believe God wants
me to be. I can come to God as a business manager would
come to the owner of the business, knowing that to lay the
matter before Him means immediate cooperation, provided the
matter has merit.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may believe that God is ready and willing to
supply me with all that I need. I pray that I may ask only
for faith and strength to meet any situation.

Miracle

And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone - even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it.

DAILY REFLECTIONS

THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER

At this juncture, his A.A. sponsor usually laughs.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 26

Before my recovery from alcoholism began, laughter was

one of the most painful sounds I knew. I never laughed and

I felt that anyone else's laughter was directed at me! My

self-pity and anger denied me the simplest of pleasures or

lightness of heart. By the end of my drinking not even

alcohol could provoke a drunken giggle in me.

When my A.A. sponsor began to laugh and point out my

self-pity and ego-feeding deceptions, I was annoyed and

hurt, but it taught me to lighten up and focus on my

recovery. I soon learned to laugh at myself and eventually I

taught those I sponsor to laugh also. Every day I ask God to

help me stop taking myself too seriously.

POT LUCK

Take all the pleasures of all spheres

And multiply each through endless years.

One minute of Heaven is worth them all.

                                                                                                     ~  Thomas Moore

The pursuit of pleasure long occupied too much of our time and attention. Whether through gratification of our senses or the satisfaction of power, and prestige we wanted more pleasure. And however much we got, it never seemed enough. In fact, one way or another, chasing pleasure always brought us pain.

It wasn't long until this pursuit led us into one of life's dead-end alleys, that we discovered it wasn’t pleasure we really wanted, but happiness. We are learning in recovery to put aside our own desires, at least momentarily, and offer someone a helping hand. In this unselfish instant we find happiness. And we find God. For in helping others, we open a channel to divine guidance.
