way that always keeps you in bondage

keep suffering and keep suffering
OR you can suffer a little
while to get free and be done with it. “

Step Five - "Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another
human being the exact nature of our wrongs."
Another great dividend we may expect from confiding our defects to another human being is humility--a word often misunderstood. To those who have made progress in A.A., it amounts to a clear recognition of what and who we really are, followed by a sincere attempt to become what we could be. Therefore, our first practical move toward humility must consist of recognizing our deficiencies. No defect can be corrected unless we clearly see what it is. But we shall have to do more than see. The objective look at ourselves we achieved in Step Four was, after all, only a look. All of us saw, for example, that we lacked honesty and tolerance, that we were beset at times by attacks of self-pity or delusions of personal grandeur. But while this was a humiliating experience, it didn't necessarily mean that we had yet acquired much actual humility. Though now recognized, our defects were still there. Something had to be done about them. And we soon found that we could not wish or will them away by ourselves. p. 58 |

Twenty-Four Hours
A.A. Thought For The
Day
A drinking life isn't a happy life. Drinking cuts you off from other people and from God. One of the worst things about drinking is the loneliness. And one of the best things about A.A. is the fellowship. Drinking cuts you off from other people, at least from the people who really matter to you, your wife and children, your family and real friends. No matter how much you love them, you build up a wall between you and them by your drinking. You're cut off from any real companionship with them. As a result, you're terribly lonely. Have I got rid of my loneliness? Meditation For The Day I will sometimes go into a quiet place of retreat with God. In that place, I will find restoration and healing and power. I will plan quiet times now and then, times when I will commune with God and arise rested and refreshed to carry on the work which God has given me to do. I know that God will never give me a load greater than I can bear. It is in serenity and peace that all true success lies. Prayer For The Day I pray that I may strengthen my inner life, so that I may find serenity. I pray that my soul may be restored in quietness and peace |

It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all our activities. "How can I best serve Thee - Thy will (not mine) be done." These are thoughts which must go with us constantly. We can exercise our will power along this line all we wish. It is the proper use of the will. c. 1976, 2001 AAWS Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85 Thought to Consider . . . The alcoholic is in no greater peril than when he takes sobriety for granted.

Daily Reflection
FREEDOM FROM . .
. FREEDOM TO
We are going to know
a new freedom. . . .
ALCOHOLICS
ANONYMOUS, p. 83
Freedom for me is
both freedom from and freedom to. The
first freedom I
enjoy is freedom from the slavery of
alcohol. What a relief!
Then I begin to experience freedom
from fear—fear of people, of economic insecurity, of
commitment, of
failure, of rejection. Then I begin to enjoy
freedom to—freedom
to choose sobriety for today, freedom
to be myself,
freedom to express my opinion, to experience
peace of mind, to
love and be loved, and freedom to grow
spiritually. But how
can I achieve these freedoms? The Big
Book clearly says
that before I am halfway through making
amends, I will begin
to know a "new" freedom; not the old
freedom of doing
what I pleased, without regard to others,
but the new freedom
that allows fulfillment of the promises
in my life. What a
joy to be free!

Pot Luck
Do not be afraid of the
ego. It depends on your mind, and as you made it by believing in it, so you
can dispel it by withdrawing belief from it. - A Course in Miracles
Some of us are fond of saying "the devil made me do it" when we've done something we're not too proud of. We might as well say "the ego made me do it" because the ego is our own personal "devil." Sometimes we like to claim that we weren't in complete control of our actions, that we were overcome by an irresistible urge. We can't however, say that with a clear conscience. At one time in our addictive past, maybe, but not now. Now, we can be responsible. An urge can overcome us only to the extent that we let it - only as we give it the power of believing in it. We have a choice. We can listen to the voice of our ego, or the voice of God. How can we tell the difference? By how we feel. The ego's urgings always leave us with some misgivings. God's guidance assures us. I choose to listen to the voice of assurance. In God's Care |
