Your Daily Reprieve for Saturday August 17, 2019

From Waynesville, NC

Some people, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty
- they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.
~Martin Buxbaum

It takes a BIG person to accept full responsibility for their own happiness.
It takes an even bigger person to accept full responsibility for their own unhappiness.
But it takes a spiritual giant who, upon realizing any degree of unhappiness,
decides to be the change they seek,
in spite of having to endure the "same old, same old"
that may still linger on for a while.
~~The Universe

The manner of giving is worth more than the gift.
~Pierre Corneille

"I am grateful to AA that I have learned some humility,
so when offered help, I can now say,
'Yes, I can use your assistance.'"
~Grapevine: Queens, New York, May 2014

15 Things You Should Never Do Drunk

Big Book Quote

"The minute we put our work on a service plane, the alcoholic
commences to rely upon our assistance rather than upon God.
He clamors for this or that, claiming he cannot master alcohol until
his material needs are cared for.
Nonsense. Some of us have taken very hard knocks to learn this truth:
Job or no job,  wife or no wife,  we simply do not stop drinking
so long as we place dependence upon other people ahead of dependence on God."

~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, Working With Others, pg. 98~

1073 Total Years of Sobriety

12&12

Tradition Six - "An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose."

At first glance, it did look like a good thing. Then doubt crept in. The association wanted to use our member's full name in all its advertising; he was to be described both as its director of publicity and as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Of course, there couldn't be the slightest objection if such an association hired an A.A. member solely because of his public relations ability and his knowledge of alcoholism. But that wasn't the whole story, for in this case not only was an A.A. member to break his anonymity at a public level, he was to link the name Alcoholics Anonymous to this particular educational project in the minds of millions. It would be bound to appear that A.A. was now backing education--liquor trade association style.

Twenty-Four Hours

A.A. Thought For The Day

"To one who feels he is an atheist or agnostic, a spiritual experience
seems impossible, but to continue as he is means disaster. To be
doomed to an alcoholic death or to live on a spiritual basis are not
always easy alternatives to face. But we have to face the fact that we
must find a spiritual basis of life--or else. Lack of power is our
dilemma. We have to find a power by which we can live, and it has to
be a power greater than ourselves." Have I found that power by which
I can live?

Meditation For The Day

Sunshine is the laughter of nature. Live out in the sunshine. The sun
and air are good medicine. Nature is a good nurse for tired bodies. Let
her have her way with you. God's grace is like the sunshine. Let your
whole being be enwrapped in the Divine spirit. Faith is the soul's
breathing in of the Divine spirit. It makes glad the hearts of human
beings. The Divine spirit heals and cures the mind. Let it have its way
and all will be well.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may live in the sunshine of God's spirit. I pray that my
mind and soul may be energized by it.

Half Measures

"
Remember that we deal with alcohol - cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help, it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power - that One is God. May you find Him now. Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon."

Daily Reflection

RIGHTING THE HARM
In many instances we shall find that though the harm done
others has not been great, the emotional harm we have
done ourselves has.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 79

Have you ever thought that the harm you did a business
associate, or perhaps a family member, was so slight that it
really didn't deserve an apology because they probably
wouldn't remember it anyway? If that person, and the
wrong done to him, keeps coming to mind, time and again,
causing an uneasy or perhaps guilty feeling, then I put that
person's name at the top of my "amends list," and become
willing to make a sincere apology, knowing I will feel calm
and relaxed about that person once this very important part
of my recovery is accomplished.

Addicted to Crisis; Personal Relations

It's sometimes a surprise to learn that we mismanage our affairs even in sobriety. We may even find that we seem to be addicted to problem situations. It takes a crisis, it seems, to give us the energy and purpose we need to get things done.

One common form of this strange addiction is procrastination.  Some of us have a tendency to put off important tasks until the very last moment, and then work overtime to get the job done.

Is this laziness?  Maybe it is, to some extent. Maybe, however, we need an impending emergency to get motivated and energized to do what needs to be done. Maybe we're addicted to crisis.

If so, this may be another disease that can be arrested but not cured.  We arrest it by slowly adopting better work habits and paying closer attention to schedules and deadlines.  Working with greater efficiency, we'll have more time and energy for the things that really matter.

Today I don't need a crisis to take charge of my life and do what needs to be done.   I'll tackle at least one thing I've been putting off, and either complete the task or get a good start on it.
